Britons soaking up the sun in Spain may be forced to quarantine when they land back home as the popular holiday destination sees a sharp spike in coronavirus cases.

Spain is on the list of 59 quarantine-exempt countries that Britons can travel to without needing to isolate for 14 days when they get back home.

But just this weekend 4,581 further cases were reported in the country - bringing its total to 264,836. More than 28,000 people have died.

Whitehall sources told The Sun that Spain's recent outbreaks are being watched and the country - or specific regions within it - could be thrown off the list all together if a decision is made this week.

CEO of travel consultancy The PC Agency Paul Charles said: 'It makes sense that if cases continue to rise in Spain, it should fall off the list.

It's worrying that Spain seems to be getting this second spike. We need to learn from what they are getting right and wrong quickly before it happens here as well .

At the moment they are getting over six times as many new cases per day than the UK

Full guidance on wearing face coverings in shops in England has been released, less than 12 hours before the new rules come into force.

Coverings will be mandatory in enclosed public spaces including supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, transport hubs, banks and post offices.

They must also be worn when buying takeaway food and drink, although they can be removed in a seating area.

Those who break the rules could face a fine of up to £100.

There are exemptions for children under 11, those with disabilities or certain health conditions, such as respiratory or cognitive impairments that make it difficult for them to wear a face covering.

It is not compulsory for shop workers to wear face coverings but the government said it "strongly" recommended that employers consider their use where appropriate.

The government said it was the responsibility of individuals to wear a face covering, although businesses are being encouraged to take reasonable steps to encourage customers to follow the law, including through signs and providing other information in store.

Police will have powers to enforce the rules, although forces have said this will be a last resort and officers will not be patrolling premises.

Tony its not only the slow pace its fact that you got similar businesses open with restrictions or some closed until whenever he decides it's safe? More and more shops are easing restrictions that were already in place, Tesco last night was busier than as been and queuing system gone although do count people in/out ....and queuing for tills back to normal, it looks like businesses are unilaterally
doing what's best for their business and customers despite WG.....but we are going to lose lot jobs unessasary with job vacancies at lowest point for god knows how long future bleak for some...

Boris Johnson says 'lessons to be learned' over handling of virus -

The prime minister says the UK government didn't understand coronavirus in the "first few weeks and months" and has acknowledged there were things the government "could have done differently" in its handling of the virus.

Speaking to the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Boris Johnson said there were "lessons to be learned" about how the virus was managed in the early stages.

"We didn't understand (the virus) in the way that we would have liked in the first few weeks and months.

"The single thing that we didn't see at the beginning was the extent to which it was being transmitted asymptomatically from person to person.

"I think it's fair to say that there are things that we need to learn about how we handled it in the early stages."

The prime minister also said there were "very open questions" over whether lockdown came too late - a marked change from ministers' previous insistence that the right decisions were taken at the right time.

Asked whether there was a delay in implementing a lockdown which ultimately cost lives, he said: "Maybe there were things we could have done differently and of course there will be time to understand what exactly we could have done, or done differently."

Same thing happened here in california, some people went crazy after being stuck with nothing to do for months & now everything is being rolled back. As with most places it's the places where alcohol is available & people congregating with no social distancing that for me are causing it.

Coronavirus: Travellers from Spain told to quarantine -

Travellers arriving in the UK from Spain must now quarantine for 14 days, under new coronavirus travel rules.

They were announced on Saturday following a spike in coronavirus cases in Spain, with more than 900 new cases of the virus reported on Friday.

Spanish officials have also warned a second wave could be imminent as major cities have seen cases surge.

Airlines including British Airways have criticised the new measures as "yet another blow" to British holidaymakers.

And Rory Boland, editor of consumer rights magazine Which?, said many travellers would be "deeply angry" that the government did not make the decision 48 hours earlier "before tens of thousands of them flew off for their summer holidays in Spain".

"Many would not have travelled if they had known they'd face 14 days of quarantine on their return," he said.

Spain wants popular islands to be removed from UK quarantine list -

Earlier, we brought you some comments by the Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya about the UK quarantine on travellers returning from Spain.

She also said the government was focusing on convincing the UK authorities to exclude the Canary and Balearic Islands from the measure, due to the low incidence of coronavirus there.

Those islands include the popular destinations of Mallorca, Ibiza and Tenerife.

"For two reasons: number one, these are islands, very safe territories, number two, their epidemiological data is extremely positive, well below epidemiological data in the UK," she said.

Tourism is a major contributor to the Spanish economy and there are far more visitors from the UK than from any other country.

Talks are under way with Spain about introducing air bridges with the Balearic and Canary Islands, a UK government source has confirmed.

An air bridge would mean people arriving from the islands would not have to quarantine for 14 days after rules changed this weekend.

The travel industry is hoping ministers make a decision by Friday.

A government source indicated to the BBC there will not be an immediate decision.

One travel industry source said the government had told them it wanted to study more data from Spain's Islands before making a decision.

The rate of infection in Spain is 35.1 cases per 100,000 people, while the UK is at 14.7, according to the latest figures from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Data up to 19 July suggested there were far lower rates of infection in the Balearic and Canary Islands than in mainland Spain.

The UK has updated its advice against all non-essential travel to Spain to include the Balearic and Canary Islands following a rise in coronavirus cases.

Foreign Office guidance was changed on Monday to include both mainland Spain and islands such as Ibiza and Tenerife.

Holiday firm Jet2 has told passengers not to go to the airport after it cancelled flights to all Spanish destinations.

The change is in addition to the self-isolation policy that began on Sunday.

The amended advice came after calls for clarity from travel companies and as airlines announced sweeping flight cancellations.

Jet2 said it will not be operating flights to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, or to mainland Spain, but will be running a schedule of flights back from those destinations on Tuesday.

Holiday operator Tui, meanwhile, said it would cancel all its packages to the Balearic and Canary Islands until 31 July and to mainland Spain until 9 August.

Travellers returning to the UK from anywhere in Spain must now self-isolate for 14 days at a registered address.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We have considered the overall situation for British nationals travelling to and from the Balearic and Canary Islands, including the impact of the requirement to self-isolate on return to the UK, and concluded that we should advise British nationals against all non-essential travel to the whole of Spain."

Speaking earlier, Boris Johnson's official spokesman warned "no travel is risk-free during this pandemic".

The rate of infection in Spain is 35.1 cases per 100,000 people, while the UK is at 14.7, according to the latest figures from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Data up to 19 July suggested there were lower rates of infection in the Balearic and Canary Islands than in mainland Spain.

Meanwhile, a government source told the BBC that the Spanish government was lobbying for the Balearic and Canary Islands to be exempt from the quarantine policy, and that discussions on the matter had taken place.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the decision to impose a 14-day quarantine as an "error" as it applied to the whole of Spain, rather than affected regions, the Reuters news agency reported.

The government should be applauded for this decision. 10 people have been confirmed to have returned from Spain last week with the Virus.

They got abused off for acting too late which was absolutely correct , now they are getting abused for acting early which is wrong. They are protecting our people and foreign economys are not our concern. The health of our population and our economy is.

Possibly they could allow islands with more tests but the mainland should be stopped.
