Cardiff City move ahead of Rangers in race for Wolves prospect

By Chris Thorpe

02/08/2020

Cardiff City are reportedly in the driving seat to resign Wolves youngster Dion Sanderson this summer, with the Mail on Sunday reporting that the Bluebirds are now favourites to secure the 20-year-old on loan.

Sanderson of course spent a large portion of the current season on loan with the Welsh club after arriving back in January – providing Neil Harris with a solid option at both full back and centre back.

The youngster is now seemingly set for another temporary move away from Molineux this summer, with a number of clubs including Rangers having shown an interest in acquiring the versatile academy graduate.

A player who shows supreme confidence in possession, Sanderson was used largely at right back by Harris this term, making a total of 10 appearances for the Bluebirds as they just missed out in the play-offs to a well drilled Fulham side.

With just one year remaining on his current contract at Wolves, the youngster will no doubt be keen to prove he deserves fresh terms once he decides on his next move over the coming weeks.

Cardiff manager Neil Harris has already made enquires about bringing Sanderson back to Cardiff on loan next season.

The Verdict

It is no surprise to see that Cardiff are now the frontrunners for Sanderson’s signature, with the defender having really thrived at the club under Harris this term.

With Rangers having now opted to sign Leon Balogun from Brighton this week, the path now seems clear for the Bluebirds to secure the services of the 20-year-old for another season.

The player’s capability of playing in numerous roles across the back four makes him an ideal addition for Harris who will be seeking to go one better with his club in the forthcoming campaign after just falling short of promotion this time around.

Lastly, the move is also likely to appeal to Sanderson as he seeks to make a lasting impression on Nuno Espirito Santo as his current deal runs into it’s last year at Wolves.

If we could raise enough to buy him that would be a better investment

Had one poor game against Fulham but was otherwise very good. Would be happy to have him on a season long loan. Can only get better with more experience.

Totally agree, needs to improve defensively but a real asset going forward. A definite yes from me!!

Very good going forward but still needs to improve defensively.

Can see why Wolves want him to get some more experience out on loan.

Woukd definitely benefit from another season in the Championship and would be pleased if we could keep him for next season.

Has a lot of potential.

I thought that as well. Very capable going forward, but does get caught of of position and has to rely on speed to recover. Would be a good player for us though.

We need to loan more youngsters from Premier League clubs like the Jacks did last season. Any successful ones we could then buy if we get promotion to the Premier League! We have enough Senior players already and buying journeymen who don’t work out is an expensive mistake ie Madine,Flint,Pack,Bogle,Jazz,Cunningham etc We also need to upgrade our Academy to produce our own youngsters and also stop Cat A academies pinching them for peanuts!

Got a mate who's a Wolves fan and he reckons they see him as one for the future so do not want to part with him.

Hope we get this over the line. We need another right back but we know exactly what we're getting with Sanderson and he'll only improve.

Cardiff City are leading the chase to re-sign Wolves defender Dion Sanderson after he impressed on loan at the Championship club.

Wolves have received a number of enquiries for the 20-year-old who can play full-back and centre-back.

Scottish Premiership contenders Rangers had shown interest prior to signing Leon Balogun on a free transfer from Brighton last week.

Not for me. The fact he was dropped after the Fulham game and never played again shows he is not a good enough full back to play for us. I think he has the makings of developing into a class centre back especially in a team that plays 3 at the back. We don't play that style and have plenty of centre backs on our books and so need to be looking for a specialist right back instead.

Played well with Albert, who was coaching him on the field..both made few mistakes, which was good to see.

the penalty clearly effected his confidence in the Fulham game and thought Harris did well to take a young inexperienced player out of the firing line .. not sure it shows anymore than that tbh..
certainly wouldnt write him off on the basis of that..

Agreed, he was excellent up until then but Harris did well to take the pressure off straight away.

Clearly a player for the future it’s been too long since we took a chance on a Premiership youngster and whilst it can be risky it can also provide really good value for money.

I always wonder why players who are described as 'great at going forward but need to improve defensively' are played as a right-back/defender?

Surely the logic would be that the player would make a far better winger/attacker.

I think some are better using a bit of pace overlapping rather than being marked as a winger / wide midfielder

But that doesn't compensate for being poor at defending. Callum Paterson is a classic case he has been far more productive as a forward than he ever was as a right-back and then the ultimate example Gareth Bale.

Know what you mean re the ability to defend but I was just saying that I’m not sure DS would be good as a winger (which I now realise is not the point you were making)

Of course there is another option which is to coach Sanderson to be a better defender

Think that’s the best option. Tbf imo he wasn’t an awful defender (Fulham game apart) but needs a bit of coaching as you say.

probably had quite a bit of that already... some players you can get to do certain things better, others just are what they are naturally... truth be told every one of our players has weaknesses that could do with improvement..
apart from that one half against Fulham i think overall he was pretty decent...

Re: Latest on Dion Sanderson:

Mon Aug 03, 2020 1:24 pm

Hmmm im still yet to be convinced by him and feel he's slightly over rated. I mean we were still playing Bacuna at RB. I want someone who's going to command that position and im not sure Sanderson is good enough to do that over a whole season. Probably in the minority over this though.

Re: Latest on Dion Sanderson:

Mon Aug 03, 2020 1:37 pm

He reminds me of early Danny Gabbidon. He'll end up centre half but isn't strong enough just yet. He is only an attacking full back because he is young, enthusiastic and athletic enough to do it.

Not a fan of the loan system, better to find your own rather than do the donkey work for the bigger clubs (Wolves now in that category :? )

Re: Latest on Dion Sanderson:

Mon Aug 03, 2020 2:15 pm

The kid is only 20 and thats what you get.If he was the finished article we wouldn't get him.He also came with no first team experience and looked a bit leggy towards the end of the season. Another season in the championship will only do him good.It also means big clubs trust Harris to look after their players which is another feather in his cap and can only bode well for us in the future.

I agree but considering the financial climate I think a few loans may be on the cards.

A very good point is this, which is quite easy to overlook. Bet there’s a fair bit of talent on the fringes at Wolves too.

Re: Latest on Dion Sanderson:

Mon Aug 03, 2020 5:58 pm

We need two right backs and he seems as good as any of we can get him on the right terms. Bacuna is pretty good at right back but is wasted there as he is so much better in midfield

Solihull have dropped out of signing him after they got Cameron Coxe
