Our new training ground, 8 years of silence

Postby exiled12345 » Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:44 pm

Evening lads,

Anyone know of any kind of tangible process with our training ground being built?

First planning approvals were passed by the Vale of Glamorgan council back in 2012. Since then, having looked at the council’s approval archive we’ve had multiple applications and amendments approved. This is as recent as last year. Including the same Cardiff/Penarth based same architects.

Yet nothing has happened. The land in question is opposite the village hall in Hensol.

It’s really strange given Steve Borley is quick to build another house of sport with the corrupt Goodway in Tremorfa.

This was the most recent press release and we’ve not heard a peep.

https://www.barryanddistrictnews.co.uk/ ... -approval/

If the ambition is to develop a youth pathway then surely a sufficient training ground is the foundation of this? As a business I don’t understand why this wouldn’t be a priority?

As far as I’m aware, there were 7 letters of objection. That’s it. The Plans last year, were formally approved (again) the plans are really impressive. I don’t understand why we would spend almost a decade wasting time on this!

The club has 5 years before the approval expires. (From 2018)

Why aren’t we as a business thinking longer term here? I don’t understand the value of houses of sport? Compared to large land and a world class facility

Guess there is a logical reason ... houses of sport are community based facilities..... but going back to training facilities wru and faw are in partnership maybe city joining them? Sure it will become clear one day?

You’d hope so but this is Cardiff city.

Surely a journo or someone ITK can ask the club what the latest is?

Nothing on WalesOnline. Only the aforementioned new house of sport down the old welsh tennis centre

Wasn’t the original build of the CCS conditional of the house of sport being built thereafter? As for the training facilities down the Vale, I agree, progress, if anything, has been very slow.
I thought that the WRU were having their training facilities at the Celtic Manor complex??

Good. Last week's story on us being linked with the Frenchman was a good example, someone dragged that from the archives :D

As for training ground, I heard a late objection went in over floodlights, which is the new norm for protesters, putting in late objections to slow things down.

Re: the house of sport, if there was a mandate this would have been in relation to the ground behind the away coach park (within the initial stadium build). Hence my question as to why there are now three locations? Yet our academy still has to train 17 miles away in Treforest, borrowing facilities off the USW. It’s unbelievably poor prioritisation by the club.

There’s a period of consultation within the planning whereby objections raised are reviewed. This has past now so the project is in affect air locked and green lit. They’ve even past the environmental surveys and so forth.

You have to tip your hat to the gypos, they have a world class facility down the gower AND a great youth facility in Landore.

The delay is one thing, but it’s unbelievably frustrating to see the the club prioritise the houses of sport and seemingly lack any kind of long term business planning/strategy.

If we want to keep and recruit better young players, there’s no point In Harris’ empty rhetoric on about ‘forging a greater link between the first team and under 23’s’ when the facilities are second rate. The new training ground is supposed to create a facility whereby the age grade teams are in and around the same centre as the first team week in week out.

Theres a complete lack of communication on this by the clubs communication team

I suppose the Elephant in the room is the £12m cost of the venture and the loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tony that would be explain the past 6 months, however initial approval was granted back in 2012. The club have been silent and stood still.

Also the cost has not been publicly announced? I also believe the venture is in conjunction with the Vale result too.

I see we’ve lost two up and coming talents in Spence and Pinchard. The club needs to sort out its long term plan

we are always going to lose players unless we upgrade to a cat1 academy... which costs around £4 million a year... is that a priority ? not for me it isnt... as a side Swansea , who you are ever so impressed with are downgrading, cutting back and for the record have produced zero since becoming cat1.

Hi Jules,

I’m sorry you’re having a bad day kid.

To Skide, just take a step back and look at the bigger point of view. My issue is the ongoing short termism from the club and the lack of any kind of coherent business plan. This includes transfers, no coincidence we have the oldest squad in the league. With little sell on value now Etheridge has gone.

In reference to Swansea, I’ve used them as an example as despite the a*rse of the club falling out recently, they have two training facilities which support the first team with top class facilities (rehab, recovery, gym) and the longer term vision of producing youth. The new academy building was opened in 2016, they’ve produced plenty of players since then. Including Cabango from under our noses. I don’t think it makes sense us upgrading the status without the infrastructure.

As mentioned, we have been sharing a small building with the blues until this season (FAW co share now). We don’t have adequate rehab facilities like hydrotherapy and the academy use the USW facility. If we are to retain and to change the ethos of the club with youth pathways then this starts with the ideology and facilities to support this. Not everyone jumping in cars to various playing facilities.

Your talking through your hat.Treforest seventeen mile away my arse.Less than 10 from the stadium would be my guess.I live in sneggy which is even further up the road and its only 8 miles to llanishen from my house.Curiously using the gypos as an example is not good.As they tighten their belt further those facilities may yet be surplus to requirements.Affordability and sustainability you used to preach when you were Canton Magic all those years ago when swansea were riding high. You wern't fooling anyone then and your not now.

Not sure the club have been silent on the issue. I remember there was a plan to build the training ground from the riches we gained from promotion to the PL, to quote at the time "we were going to do a Burnley" i.e. we would improve infrastructure and produce our own players rather than waste the cash on the transfer market.

However, events have overtaken us. Relegation was the start and quickly followed by the COVID-19 crisis. Any cash put aside for the TG development now has to be used to fill the financial gap by fans not being allowed into the stadium.

Going all the way back to 2012 I remember many times the TG being quoted as costing £12/13m. Even if we were splitting the cost with the Vale 50/50 that would still mean a £6m outlay and that is on a price from 8 years ago.

Attached for your reference. Also I’ve never posted on here, this weird paranoia is hilarious. Speaking of hats I’m
Sure the tin foil one is on already lad.

Tony I fully understand the recent affects hindering the development. I remember the Burnley reference. However If it has been put on hold then the club should communicate this. As I’ve said it’s a long time to announce something and then nothing to happen.

i do see why a club woul;d want cat1..the rest ? i dont see the introduction of academies has added anything other than money pits..... players used to be scouted by clubs {a lot less players } and in fairness many would become pros.. none of this academy games every weekend. , they played for their local clubs and just the odd games for their now pro club.. specialised training facilities were non existent.. it was where ever. honestly do not see where the improvement is.... few points though ..this 17 miles in cars...our players come from various parts of Wales so are generally travelling further anyway ... not sure why the CCS is in the equation as most training facilities are miles from the club ground including Fairwwod... Spence was released , ive watched him and disagree but time will tell on that one...and didnt Swansea buy Cabango from Newport ?....
