About Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is a professional association football club based in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. The team competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Formed in 1867 as an offshoot of The Wednesday Cricket Club (itself formed in 1820), they went by the name of the Wednesday Football Club until changing to their current name in 1929.

Wednesday is one of the oldest football clubs in the world of any code, and the third-oldest professional association football club in England. In 1868 its team won the Cromwell Cup, only the second tournament of its kind. They were founding members and inaugural champions of the Football Alliance in 1889, before joining The Football League three years later. In 1992, they became founder members of the Premier League. The team has spent most of its league history in English football's top flight, but they have not played at that level since being relegated in 2000.

The Owls, as they are nicknamed, have won four league titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and one FA Community Shield. Wednesday have also competed in UEFA cup competitions on four occasions, reaching the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1963. In 1991, they defeated Manchester United 1–0 in the Football League Cup Final as a tier 2 team. As of 2019 they remain the last team to win one of English football's major trophies while outside the top flight.

In the 19th century, they played their matches at several stadiums around central Sheffield, including Olive Grove and Bramall Lane. Since 1899, the club has played all its home matches at Hillsborough stadium, a near-40,000 capacity stadium in the north-west Sheffield suburb of Owlerton. Wednesday’s biggest rivals are Sheffield United, with whom they contest the Steel City derby.

Previous Meeting

We won 2-1 away at Sheffield Wednesday in December 2019.

Izzy Brown issues defiant message ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's tussle with Cardiff City

The Owls take on the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium tomorrow

By Dom Howson

Sheffield Live

Attacking midfielder Izzy Brown has sounded out a defiant message on the eve of Sheffield Wednesday's Championship curtain-raiser with Cardiff City.

Garry Monk's troops face an uphill task to stay up before a ball is even kicked, with the club kicking off the campaign bottom of the table with a 12-point deficit after an independent disciplinary commission found them guilty of breaking English Football League's spending rules.

A trip to Cardiff, last season's beaten semi-finalists, is not a kind start to the 2020/21 season.

But Brown, one of five summer additions, is confident the Owls can get off to a positive start in South Wales.

"I have played against Cardiff a few times," he told Yorkshire Live. "You know what type of game you are going to get against them.

"It will be tough but nothing really scares me about Cardiff because you have got to trust yourself and the players that you are with to get a result. I think we can get a result against any team in this league.

"Of course, it is important to get a win in the first game of the season and I feel like we can do that.

If you cannot see this competition entry form please click here

"You have to have the belief and focus that you can win every game when you go on to the pitch."

The 23-year-old, on a season long-loan from Chelsea, is expected to make his league debut for the Owls. Brown was utilised in a central role last week but may drop back into midfield following the signings of forwards Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass.

After Cardiff, Monk's men entertain newly-relegated Watford before heading to Bristol City. They host Queens Park Rangers in their final Championship fixture before the first international break on October 3.

"If you start well, it helps with confidence," said Brown. "When you get confidence going all the way through the club, there is a completely different atmosphere."

'Fuel to my fire', Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk on negativity, Lee Tomlin and not facing abuse at Cardiff City

Sheffield Star

Friday 11th September 2020

It’ll be a strange afternoon for Garry Monk, stepping into the Cardiff City stadium without facing a tirade of unprintable abuse.

Sheffield Wednesday make the trip to South Wales tomorrow hoping to get their Championship season off to a good start and begin chipping away at their 12-point deficit straight away.

And Swansea City legend Monk, who made over 250 appearances over 10 years for the Bluebirds’ bitter rivals before serving as their manager, admitted it will be different lining up in a Cardiff technical area to the politeness of empty stands.

GARY MONK:

“It’ll be the first time, won’t it?,” he laughed. “Those things have never bothered me, it’s part of the pantomime of football which can be great at times.

“You need that, negativity is just fuel to my fire. I love that and want more of it, it’s what drives me.

“Negativity, comments, chants, whatever it may be, people writing about you that don’t know you, whatever it is, that’s the fuel to the fire, to keep proving that point.”

Monk never lost against Cardiff as a player, winning two and drawing two, but since winning his first two matches against them as a manager when in charge of Leeds, the Owls’ 1-1 draw back in October is the only point he has taken in five.

“Everyone knows the history with them," he said. “It’s a great history, a great rivalry, but it’s not about that now. It’s about these players and Sheffield Wednesday, going down there and getting the points that we need.”

The home side will be without attacking threat Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who was released from his contract for a reported breach of contract earlier this week.

It looked likely they would also be without midfield pair Joe Ralls and Lee Tomlin, although yesterday Bluebirds boss Neil Harris said he hoped both would make a return to fitness.

Tomlin has been a particular thorn in the side of Wednesday over the years, scoring three times and producing two assists in their last five meetings. His 87th-minute equaliser back in October should have been disallowed for offside.

Asked whether his omission would be seen as a bonus, Monk said: “I don’t really care about any of that. I can’t control any of that, I just care about my team and working as hard as I can with my team as they’re working as hard as they can to be ready.

“We’re going to have really good moments, we’re going to have difficult moments, but we’re going to stick together, we’re going to fight.

“My job is to work to where we’ve got a team that is fully committed every single week for that shirt, that the fanbase can be proud of whether they’re in the stands or back at home watching.

“I don’t concentrate too much on what the opposition are doing, we all get that information when the teamsheets come in, who is playing, who isn’t playing and what that means for them, but that’s not our concentration in the build-up, our concentration is what’s right.

“We prepare for the best Cardiff team and their best players.”

I don't think there is any point saying Isaac Vasell is still injured everyone can just correctly assume he is still injured until they here to the contrary. Isaac Vasell is fit to play now that would be news.

Cardiff City have only lost two of their last 13 league games against Sheffield Wednesday (W5 D6 L2), winning last time out against the Owls in December 2019.

Sheffield Wednesday are winless in their last nine away league matches against Cardiff City (D4 L5), with each of the last four ending level.

Cardiff City have lost their last two season openers in league competition – they last lost three in a row between 1982-83 and 1984-85.

Sheffield Wednesday will kick off their league campaign on the road for a fourth consecutive season, winning last year at Reading, 3-1.

Cardiff’s Lee Tomlin has been directly involved in eight goals in 12 league appearances against Sheffield Wednesday, scoring four goals and assisting four. Tomlin has scored or assisted in his last two vs the Owls.

Better from Cardiff, who break down the right through Osei-Tutu.

His cross is cleared but only to Hoilett, who hammers a volley, but it's straight into Kieffer Moore and out for a goal kick.

A long throw-in from Will Vaulks causes havoc and falls to Moore at the back post. He hooks it across the face of goal and a sprawling Wednesday defender clears for a corner.

Save! The corner is cleared but Bennett makes an excellent tackle to regain possession, Vaulks swivels and hits first time from 20 yards, but Cameron Dawson saves comfortably.

Struggling to string 2 passes together.

Kieffer Moore goes down after a couple of rough challenges, but no foul is given, much to the City camp's annoyance.

Morrison dinks one over the top for Hoilett, but he is outmuscled too and it's a goal kick.
