Fans at 10 EFL games this weekend.

Up to 1,000 fans will be allowed to attend 10 different English Football League games this weekend as part of the government's crowd pilots.

The news comes as discussions between the EFL and the government about a return for more supporters from 1 October continue.

No fans have attended an EFL fixture since March because of the coronavirus.

Three Championship games, four League One matches and three in League Two have been chosen for this weekend.

The following games, all taking place on Saturday, have been chosen (all kick-off times 15:00 BST unless stated):

Championship

Luton Town v Derby County

Middlesbrough v AFC Bournemouth

Norwich City v Preston North End

League One

Blackpool v Swindon Town

Charlton Athletic v Doncaster Rovers

Hull City v Crewe Alexandra

Shrewsbury Town v Northampton Town

League Two

Carlisle United v Southend United

Forest Green Rovers v Bradford City

Morecambe v Cambridge United

EFL clubs have been given the go-ahead to run pilot events this weekend with up to 1,000 spectators allowed to attend matches.

This will be the biggest weekend of football crowds returning to the EFL crowds since March.

The English Football League will continue to stage pilots with up to 1,000 fans at matches this weekend, following approval from the government today.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden will meet with sports bodies later this week to discuss the planned return of spectators to sport from 1 October with crowds of up to 2,500.

Premier League and Championship clubs will have to wait till October for them to have any chance of crowds returning and that still would only be up to a max of 30% of their capacity.

The English Government has given the go ahead, the Welsh Government as still adamant it’s a no.

The English Football League will continue to stage pilots with up to 1,000 fans at matches this weekend, following approval from the government today.

EFL clubs were asked to put in requests by Tuesday in order for their plans to be signed off in time.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden will meet with sports bodies later this week to discuss the planned return of spectators to sport from 1 October with crowds of up to 2,500.

The EFL said the pilots are an "important step" for fans' safe return.

Those in local lockdown areas were told they would not receive permission to take part in the test events.

In a letter to clubs this morning, the EFL's head of policy John Nagle said: "We cannot guarantee at this stage that all clubs that would like to stage a pilot will be given permission to do so, as only a limited number will be approved.

"We are still in discussions with regard to pilot matches on other dates."

Nagle apologised for the "late notice and short timescales", but said "we are very much in the government's hands on this one".

An EFL spokesman said it remains "in discussions with the government about the pilot programme which may include a limited number of further pilot matches during September with capacity limited to 1,000".

"The League is clear in its view that social distancing can be applied safely in football stadia and that having crowds at matches is an absolutely essential part of helping to protect club finances, which remain under extreme pressure," they added.

"Therefore, the successful delivery of further pilots will be an important step towards getting larger numbers of fans into grounds safely."

Can't see this happening in Wales any time soon.

Drakeford desperate to bring in more restrictions rather than allow this to happen.

Said before this is almost a pointless exercise it wont help restore crowds to stadiums in any numbers that are going to help clubs! We are not going to jump from 1k to 10k just like that, and the cost of putting in protocols will make excersise to expensive for clubs so will lose more money , ice hockey have abandoned new season as not viable with 1k crowds ... rugby owner saying cannot finish season on crowds of 2k....it may help smaller clubs but championship clubs need more than the possible 30% they are muting for after xmas.. most sports will have same problem and of course all reliant on covid being in remission to extent it is safe to have more than 30 people mixing together!
Let's just hope there is enough teams left to make a league up when this is over.

Middlesbrough must be desperate for money.

Their manager just off with Covid and on the periphery or an area placed on lockdown you would have thought with such deadly disease they would have pulled this but seems not hmmmmmm

'donn't go out unless there a till' never a truer line said.
