Covid-19: English lockdown may last beyond 2 Dec, says Gove

Michael Gove says it is his "fervent hope" that England's new lockdown will end on 2 December - but that ministers will be "guided by the facts".

"We do need to get the R rate below 1," the Cabinet Office minister told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

The strict measures are due to come into force from Thursday.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms, non-essential shops and places of worship will close, but schools, colleges and universities can stay open.

The prime minister is expected to deliver a statement in the Commons on Monday before a vote on the latest restrictions on Wednesday. Labour has said it will back the lockdown.

Boris Johnson said he expects the lockdown to last until 2 December, after which England's regional tiered system will be reintroduced.

But Mr Gove told the BBC decisions would "obviously be guided by the facts".

Deaths are associated with the virus, not necessarily directly caused by Covid-19. This is a statement from a health board in relation to deaths... this is same way all deaths are calculated along with using excess deaths over 5yr average? In other words the amount of deaths the public are being told are from covid is bollocks ..... because they dont know actual figures its easier to make it up by mentioning covid as cause death regardless.. :o

Allan, this has always been my view, this government have been counting deaths, that in truth had nothing to do with covid being cause of death, just a positive(and possibly false)test result,in previous 28 days!
They showed a patient yesterday, who had terminal cancer, but also tested positive for covid, now he is stuck in hospital, waiting to die(of cancer) but with the brucey bonus,of not being allowed loved ones from being with him when he does!!!! So f@cking wrong!!

The Balearic Govt:
For British & German tourists from March 2021

The Government will pay for rapid tests for tourists in ports and airports

The Government will pay for the antigen tests, or better known as rapid tests, for tourists who come to the Balearic Islands from the next tourist season.

The Balearic Executive has explained that it recommends that tourists do a PCR at origin but, if they do not present it upon arrival, they will be given a quick test both at ports and at airports.
advertising

The Minister of the Economic Model, Tourism and Labor, Iago Negueruela, has stated that "our line of work has always been directed to PCRs at source" with harmonized European regulations, but if it is not possible "the Government will guarantee that tests are carried out ».

He has also stated that one of the aspects of the health security strategy that the Government wants to agree with hoteliers to try to reactivate the economic engine of the islands from next Easter is to define what diagnostic tests could be performed on tourists and what other measures can improve entry control at airports and ports.

Start of the tourist season at Easter

This has been decided in the meeting held by the president of the Government, Francina Armengol, with the hoteliers. In addition, they have opted for the tourist season to start in March, specifically at Easter. "March has to be the month we open," Negueruela has declared.

For her part, the president of the Mallorca Hotel Business Federation (FEHM), Maria Frontera, assured that "the control of ports and airports is essential." At this point, she insisted that beyond the commercial strategies that can be established from the business sphere, the health situation in the Balearic Islands and in the main markets for tourism to the islands, Germany and the United Kingdom will be the determining "variable". .

Frontera has stated that in addition, businessmen need "many more certainties" in the face of the 2021 tourist campaign, for which it has demanded guarantees of the continuity of employment regulation files (ERTE) of force majeure due to the pandemic beyond January 31, the deadline set today.

Negueruela has also trusted that the central government and social agents agree to an extension of the ERTE that should be extended until the reactivation of tourism. "It would not make sense for the billions invested not to be maintained (...), they would be useless if companies fail," she said.

The minister has indicated that it is also necessary to maintain the special benefits for discontinuous fixed lines until the next season starts. “We want to be in 2021,” María Frontera declared, “to continue maintaining employment (...). We are presented with a very difficult 2021 season, more than half companies have not been able to open and we do not know they will be able to open. The reserves are stopped, there is no demand ».

Negueruela has emphasized that, to overcome these harsh prospects, the hotel sector and the regional administration have to coordinate to offer security guarantees to visitors and live with the pandemic by recovering as much activity as possible.

Furlough extended until March - Sunak

Chancellor Rishi Sunak tells MPs says the government’s highest priority remains the same – to “protect jobs and livelihoods”.

However, he says given the worse economic situation, he believes it is “right to go further”.

He says the furlough scheme will be extended until the end of March. He confirms it will pay 80% of salaries.

He says the policy will be reviewed in January “to decide whether economic circumstances are improving enough to ask employers to contribute more”.

He says this means the incentive of the Job Retention bonus falls away.

The increase in coronavirus infections appears to be slowing around the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics. Around one person in every 90 in England has Covid. In Wales and Scotland the figure is around one in 110, while in Northern Ireland the figure is one in 75.

A further 355 deaths were reported in the UK on Friday, while there have been a further 23,287 positive coronavirus tests.

People queued for Covid tests in Liverpool as the first trial of city-wide testing in England got under way. The city's mayor, Joe Anderson, said the pilot could save lives and "get the city out of tier three restrictions".

A university that spent £11,000 on campus fencing was forced to remove the barriers hours later amid protests. Students living at the University of Manchester's Fallowfield halls of residence awoke to find workers putting up "huge metal barriers" on Thursday.

The government has defended its use of Covid statistics after data shown in a presentation to justify the current lockdown in England had to be revised. A chart presented at Saturday's No 10 briefing suggested a worse-case figure of up to 1,500 deaths a day by December 8, well above April's 1,000 peak. This has now been adjusted down to 1,010 a day, after an error was found.

Covid case rise 'plateauing' as Wales firebreak lockdown nears end -

Wales is starting to see a "levelling off" of Covid-19 case rates, the country's health minister has said on the final day of its 17-day lockdown.

Vaughan Gething also said mass testing, as being trialled in Liverpool, will be considered in Wales' high case rate areas like Merthyr and the valleys.

He said the full impact of the lockdown would not be seen for two weeks yet.

Opposition parties have suggested high case rate areas should have stricter local rules.

Wales' lockdown - which the Welsh Government said would help stop the health service in Wales becoming "overwhelmed" - ends on Monday just a few days after England's four-week lockdown started.

The number of patients in Welsh hospitals with coronavirus is now the highest since the height of the pandemic in April.

Covid vaccine: Boris Johnson warns of 'several more hurdles' -

The development of a coronavirus vaccine has "cleared one significant hurdle but there are several more to go", Boris Johnson has said.

The PM said early findings showing a jab could prevent 90% of people getting Covid-19 were positive, but added it was "very, very early days".

He warned people not to "rely on this news as a solution" to the pandemic.

"The biggest mistake we could make now would be to slacken our resolve at a critical moment," he said.

It came as a further 21,350 coronavirus cases were reported in the UK on Monday, along with 194 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

Covid vaccine: No guarantees on Pfizer roll-out but NHS ready - Hancock

The NHS will be ready from December to roll out the new coronavirus vaccine if it gets approved, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

Mr Hancock told MPs the news about the vaccine was an important step but "there are no guarantees".

He also said "we don't know" how many people will need to be vaccinated in order for life to return to normal.

And he announced that, from Tuesday, NHS staff will begin being tested twice a week.

It comes as a further 20,412 coronavirus cases were reported in the UK on Tuesday, with another 532 deaths within 28 days of a positive test recorded.

Tony the figures WG and Westminster use are so unreliable ! As I posted earlier excess deaths are 30k+ between march/July but covid related deaths are 2600 but that doesn't mean actually dying of covid though...

Covid: Field hospital to become rugby stadium again

Despite having fewer than 50 patients, the Dragon's Heart was the only one of Wales' 17 field hospitals to treat people.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething defended the decision to spend £166m on the facilities, saying: "If we had needed extra capacity, in much greater numbers, and I had not acted as I did, I think the public would have rightly said, 'Why on earth didn't that man in charge do something about it?'"

My comment:
It's incredible really. The over reaction. I mean some of us have been saying it all along. I don't buy the 'what if' argument. How can us on here see the facts, see that it wasn't going to happen, and all we've done is read, listen to both arguments and form educated outcomes. How have all these 'professionals' been duped so badly?!

166m for less than 50! That works out about 3.5m per person!! My party line of this will be studied for years to come on how NOT to crisis manage.

there has been no stepping back and taking a more considered view on any of it...i thought at some point it was bound to happen but 8 months and im still waiting ... im thinking now they have burnt so many bridges its impossible to do anything other than just keeping knee jerk decisions.
how can you be pushing how bad a second wave might be...which they have and at the same time de commission the field hospitals... ? seems to be very few asking questions though..
