NEIL HARRIS WANTS 11 CARDIFF CITY PLAYERS TO ALL COME FROM

" NEIL HARRIS WANTS 11 CARDIFF CITY PLAYERS TO ALL COME FROM THE CARDIFF ACADEMY "

NEIL HARRIS:

"With the new plans being submitted for the new state of the art academy in Llanrumney and Cardiff City now focussing on bringing in the academy kids to play for the first team, Vincent Tan would like to see our squad trimmed to 18 senior players, backed up by the academy for now."

"Ultimately, without getting too carried away, the plan is to have 11 Cardiff City kids in the first team one day as men. Not easy, but that's the focus and what the club want to see after a period of time."

" For me building a club from academy upwards is a great project to be involved in and I am very excited by the future, but this takes time and everyone has to be patient."

Could work if we bring in real quality in the 18 players and not just squad players, hopefully bagan progresses but I fear that if he does become decent then the board will sell first opportunity

Until we get a sniff of the prem then we buy a load of overpaid carthorses. And rinse and repeat.

But if they do that,it will go against their own desires to promote from within.

This is a long term project and hopefully when it’s finished and up and running we might get lucky to have 1-5 every season good enough to be in first team squad.

Wales on line reported that the Jacks Category 1 Academy has produced 10 players now playing in the Championship or Premier League, including Dan James, McBurnie and Roden who were recently sold for a total of £50m+ so achieving a Cat 1 Academy is certainly worthwhile despite costing a reported £4m/ year to run!

Realistically 2 per season would be a great result

Just checked that at present 8 clubs from outside the Premier League have a Cat 1 Academy including Sunderland so surely as Capital of Wales we should go for it particularly as the Jacks are apparently going down to Cat 2 as the Yanks continue to cut costs. We can then pinch any good prospects from down West as well as the rest of Wales and the West Country!

seems to be 2 convos going ? { 1 } the 11 Cardiff kids in the first 11 , which implies local boys ? pie in the sky...
{ 2 } and the importance of having cat 1 ... which im not sure about tbh...as there is quite an expense ..
tbh the WOL article is more than a bit misleading , of the 10 mentioned by WOL......Roberts, Cullen and Rodon are actually local and played through the age groups.... but were all within the set up before Swansea attained cat 1 status...
James was bought from Hulls academy as was cobango from Newport...mcburnie had actually played for Bradfords 1st team and had 2 loan spells prior to Swansea buying him....Garrick had played senior football in the Northern premier...Fulton had played 83 games for Falkirk ..Byers was released by Watford and picked up out of contract as a 20 year old.. and Benda arrived as an 18 year old having played in the german youth system for a number of clubs....
apart from the first 3 its not been a case of looking for young boys and nurturing them right through but more a case of scouting older teenagers from all over the place who have already been identified and taken on by other clubs...
im not against or for the later , and have no idea how many of these teenagers Swansea have bought / lured / pinched that did not make it or at what cost.... but i dont think thats what Harris has been getting at ?

Even Joe Bagan came through Southampton’s Accademy and not ours.

McBurnie came through the academy at Leeds not swansea

well Leeds up to under 14s and then Bradford where he became a first team player... Swansea signed him as a grown up...

I can see this happening though we would probably be in the conference south when it does. As someone said our best youth team player is a product of the Southampton youth team set up.
