It must be heart-breaking for these older vulnerable and mostly lonely people (many with dementia) not to see their families, and for their families not to see them. Just holding their hands (if they don't recognise the family member) is a massive comfort.
I know this is not a nice comment, but as these residents are nearing their end of life time, then there is much less worry of long term effects (if any ) of the vaccines. So there should be no complaints or arguing about the safety of the vaccines, as long as they are administered correctly by a competent person.

i do agree mate...
but isnt this.....its ok because they are at the end of their lives and is the hardship really worth it line....the exact opposite to all the lockdowns and restrictions to sheild these very same people..

Covid-19: Family Christmas get-togethers being considered -

Ministers are looking at how to relax coronavirus restrictions so families can celebrate Christmas together.

The government's medical adviser on Covid, Susan Hopkins, said they were working on a plan and wanted Christmas to be "as close to normal as possible".

She said tough restrictions might be needed before and after the holiday to allow mixing to take place.

BBC health correspondent Nick Triggle said any rule change would be for a limited time, maybe just a few days.

The prime minister's official spokesman confirmed ministers were "looking at ways to ensure that people can spend time with close family over Christmas at the end of what has been an incredibly difficult year".

All four UK nations - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - are trying to work out a common approach to Christmas so families spread across the UK can still meet up.

Being the cynic that I am about governance and control I politely suggest to any reader that the Government know they cannot CONTROL the Christmas period.

The vast majority of people, including me, will go where they want to be at Christmas......namely with their family, regardless of any dreconian rules in place on liberty and freedom. They know this to be the case and they know that on mass they cannot enforce any restrictions.

Hence, the supposed olive branch they offer........with the caveat "She said tough restrictions might be needed before and after the holiday to allow mixing to take place.".......please wake up.
Not a shred of evidence exists in favour of the idea that life is serious........

I agree, the government is totally unable to control people in this country, unlike the culture in Asian countries where people follow instructions. The virus will spread widely and savage the UK.

Covid: Mass testing in Wales schools and colleges considered -

All pupils and students could soon be tested for coronavirus, the Welsh Government has said.

University students are already due to be checked for Covid-19 before they travel home for the festive period.

Now the body which advises the Welsh Government has said all school children, college students, teachers and staff should also be tested.

The Welsh Government said education and childcare were "key testing priorities".

Students at universities are being urged to take a new rapid turnaround test, regardless of whether they have symptoms, before they travel home for Christmas.

All students in Wales have been asked to travel home by 9 December at the latest.

Covid-19: Strengthened tier system for England after lockdown -

A tougher three-tiered system of local restrictions will come into force in England when the lockdown ends on 2 December, Downing Street has said.

Boris Johnson is expected to set out his plan - including details of how families can see different households at Christmas - to MPs on Monday.

More areas are set to be placed into the higher tiers to keep the virus under control, No 10 said.

And some tiers will be strengthened to safeguard lockdown progress.

It is not yet clear exactly how restrictions could change. Full details of the so-called "Covid winter plan" are expected on Monday, after cabinet discussions on Sunday.

Covid: Merthyr Tydfil mass testing begins -

Hundreds of people queued as mass testing began in Merthyr Tydfil, set up to try and curb the spread of Covid.

Up to 60,000 people could be tested in total, with those without symptoms urged to take a test.

Covid-19: Christmas get-together plan backed by UK nations -

The UK's four nations have backed plans to allow some household mixing "for a small number of days" over Christmas.

It comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to unveil on Monday a tougher three-tiered system for England - to be introduced at the end of the current lockdown on 2 December.

The 10pm closing time for pubs and restaurants could also be relaxed.

Work to finalise the arrangements for a UK-wide approach to restrictions this Christmas is ongoing.

One option that has been discussed is that three households could be allowed to meet up "over a number of days, maybe five days", according to the BBC's deputy political editor Vicki Young.

The Cabinet Office said ministers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland had endorsed a "shared objective of facilitating some limited additional household bubbling for a small number of days".

WOW NO WONDER THE VIRUS IS SPREADING BEYOND

WALES / CARDIFF ON SATURDAY

The dramatic scenes and accounts from an incredibly busy day and violent night in Cardiff

Streets were packed with Christmas shoppers and pubs were fully booked, with reports of people travelling to the city from lockdown England, but then things spilled over into violence

By Anna Lewis

Media Wales

Sunday 22nd November 2020

Shoppers and pubs have described one of the busiest Saturdays of the year in Cardiff hours before a "violent disturbance" that left six people injured.

Pubs and restaurants were fully booked ahead of the weekend as hundreds of people descended on the capital city to take advantage of Christmas shopping.

On Saturday queues were seen outside many shops in the city centre despite the rain as people took advantage of the second weekend after fire-break lockdown.

Later on Saturday evening, the streets were described as "crazy" compared to a normal weekend while customers enjoyed a drink ahead of the 10pm curfew. According to pub owners, a number of customers were believed to have come across the border from England, despite the national lockdown still in place.

At around 9.50pm, a heavy police presence attended Queen Street after receiving "multiple" reports of a violent incident.

Six people were injured, including three with stab wounds and one person with a head injury.

Four teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.

On Sunday, the town centre remained busy during the day time and evening, with groups of people spotted in St Mary Street and near Cardiff Castle.

Describing the city centre in the afternoon before Saturday's attack, one group from Treorchy and Tonypandy said the amount of people out shopping made some members feel "anxious".

Lisa Pearce said: "It's not the same. There's too many people, it's making me anxious. We'll all have to go back to the hospital because of all the people here. We've had to queue in each place and you can't get to a pub because everywhere is fully booked."

Friend Kirsty Richards added: "I came last Sunday and it wasn't like this but because it's a Saturday everyone is off."

Posting ahead of Saturday night, one pub in the city centre urged customers to be "nice" ahead of what was expected to be the "busiest Saturday of the year".

In a Facebook post, Bub's Cardiff said: "Been absolutely swarmed with emails today and yesterday of people trying to book a table for tonight - lemme tell you now, we've been fully booked for a while.

"Go easy on us, we're a small team, we don't pay someone extra to do the emails and take the bookings, it's one person in the morning whilst also setting up the bar and getting everything ready for the day.

"Now, as I said - we are fully booked today..."

Footage of the major incident in Queen Street:

Over in St David's Street, Traders Tavern owner Nicola McCue described a "very busy" day and evening for the city centre pub on Saturday.

She said: "It was very busy yesterday all day. We did find it was not all Welsh people too. We did find a lot of people yesterday were from over the bridge which is something that needs to be addressed.

"Every weekend has been the same. We are fully booked next week, and the 18th.

"It's good but we have got to have someone on the door, if someone moves you have to have the table quickly cleared as you don't want empty space. It's hard work. At closing time, people are just getting stuck into it when you ring the bell at quarter to 10."

Speaking about the incident on Saturday evening, she added: "We did see a lot of commotion back at the Motorpoint Arena area.

"But we never had any trouble, we have got nothing but complements at the end of the night."

One pub owner, who did not want to be named, also described a busy night after turning a number of people away at the door.

They added: "We had a lot of English people over here celebrating Christmas."

On Saturday evening, one eye-witness described a "mass brawl" outside Central Bar in Windsor Place.

Find out about crime levels where you live:

They said: "It was 9.45pm outside Central Bar when the incident started. There were around 15-20 males fighting outside.

"One group then ran towards Sainsbury’s pursued by the other, one with a chair over their head. This was thrown and hit a parked car.

"Police were called at 9.46pm and arrived on scene at around 9.48."

South Wales Police have since been granted powers to ban people from the city centre for 24 hours if they cause trouble

One woman who lives in the city centre also said there was plenty of people drinking on Saturday night.

She said: “I live in the flats above Greggs so I saw the whole incident but town was crazy last night.
"It felt like a normal weekend. So many people were out drinking and there was no social distancing anywhere. We’ve come so far but it looks like we’re going backwards already.”

Another added: "Town was awful, mental. Massive crowds on the streets and lots of groups and students.”

For other businesses, however, Saturday marked a busy day but nothing close to the numbers they would usually expect at this time of year.

Tighter Covid restrictions in Wales before Christmas considered -

Tighter Covid restrictions could be implemented in Wales in the run-up to Christmas to bring the country more in line with other parts of the UK.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said the Welsh Government was hoping for a "common approach" from the four UK nations over the festive period.

It comes as details emerge of how rules could be relaxed at Christmas.

But Mr Gething dismissed as "kite flying" reports suggesting three households could meet for five days.

A Welsh Government spokesman said ministers are considering whether Wales should adopt some of the restrictions currently in place in Scotland and those planned for England after the lockdown there ends in December.

Covid-19: Three households can mix over Christmas in UK -

Up to three households will be able to meet up during a five-day Christmas period of 23 to 27 December, leaders of the four UK nations have agreed.

People can mix in homes, places of worship and outdoor spaces, and travel restrictions will also be eased.

But a formed "Christmas bubble" must be "exclusive" and would not be able to visit pubs or restaurants together.

The leaders urged people to "think carefully about what they do" to keep the risk of increased transmission low.

They added 2020 "cannot be a normal Christmas" but family and friends will be able to see each other in a "limited and cautious" way.

The measures will see travel restrictions across the four nations, and between tiers and levels, lifted to allow people to visit families in other parts of the UK.

Anyone travelling to or from Northern Ireland may travel on the 22 and 28 December, but otherwise travel to and from bubbles should be done between the 23 and 27.

How much will coronavirus cost the UK?

We won't know how big the final bill will be until after the crisis is over. But the government will certainly have to borrow enormous amounts of money because it is spending more than it is taking in from tax.

On 25 November, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which keeps tabs on government spending, estimated that borrowing would be £394bn for the current financial year (April 2020 to April 2021).

That's the highest figure ever seen outside wartime.

To put that into context: before the crisis, the government was expecting to borrow about £55bn for the whole financial year.

Covid: Cardiff police given random vehicle check powers -

Police have been granted extra powers, including carrying out random vehicle checks, to ensure people are not breaking Covid-19 rules in Cardiff.

South Wales Police said it would increase the numbers of officers on duty to encourage people to adhere to the rules.

The powers will be in place from 09:00 on Friday until 17:00 on Sunday.

People breaching regulations could be fined and told to leave the city, the force said.

Topshop owner Arcadia on brink of collapse -

By Howard Mustoe

Sir Philip Green's retail empire Arcadia, which includes Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins, is understood to be on the brink of collapse.

Sir Philip had been in talks with potential lenders about borrowing £30m to help the business through Christmas.

However, these talks have failed and administrators could be appointed on Monday, putting 13,000 jobs at risk.

Arcadia said it was working on "contingency options".
Is this because of the pandemic?
Arcadia admitted that the coronavirus had had "a material impact on trading across our businesses".

Covid: More than 150 arrests at London anti-lockdown protest -

More than 150 people have been arrested during anti-lockdown protests in London's West End.

The group Save Our Rights UK said it held the protest, which started from Marble Arch on Saturday afternoon.

The Metropolitan Police said it had been a "challenging day" and officers were still urging people to go home.

It said it made arrests for a number of different offences, including breaching coronavirus restrictions, assaulting a police officer and illegal drugs.

Police officers were booed and met with chants of "shame on you" as protesters, many not wearing face masks, ignored requests to leave.

Earlier protesters, including some dressed as Christmas elves, brandished signs reading "All I want for Christmas is my freedom back", "Ditch the face masks" and "Stop controlling us".

Covid: Risk of third wave 'if we don't get balance right' - Raab

England could face a third wave of coronavirus if ministers do not "get the balance right" with restrictions, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab says.

He defended the move to a tiered approach when England's lockdown ends on Wednesday, saying the curbs are needed to "bear down" on the pandemic.

MPs will vote on the system on Tuesday, with Labour undecided on its stance.

The PM has told MPs the restrictions will expire on 3 February in a bid to stop a Commons rebellion.

In a letter to all MPs and peers, Boris Johnson said rules could be eased in December, MPs could vote again in January and the tier system could end in February.

But Labour's shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy said her party's support was "not unconditional" and they were seeking "clarity" about the tier system.

It comes as a further 12,155 people have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the UK total to 1,617,327.
