Covid: UK surge in cases an 'extreme concern' -

A surge in coronavirus cases in the UK is of "extreme concern", a health boss says, as a record number of cases was reported for the second day running.

On Tuesday, 53,135 new Covid cases were recorded as well as 414 more deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

Not all data was reported in full over the Christmas period, leading to a lag in some data, but Public Health England said there had been a "real increase".

The health secretary said the NHS was facing "unprecedented pressures".

Ahead of an announcement on any changes to England's tier restrictions on Wednesday, Matt Hancock added in a tweet: "We must suppress this virus to protect our NHS & save lives until the vaccine can keep us safe."

Hospitals in England and Wales are now treating more Covid patients than at the peak of the first wave in April.

Three quarters of England will be in the toughest tier of Covid restrictions from tomorrow, as the Midlands, North East, parts of the North West and parts of the South West are escalated to tier four

Secondary schools across most of England are to remain closed for an extra two weeks for most pupils. Primary schools will remain temporarily closed in a small number of areas with the highest infection rates.

The UK reported the deaths of another 981 people, who died within 28 days of a positive test and recorded a further 50,023 lab-confirmed cases of the virus

The prime minister called on the public to "redouble" its efforts at this "critical moment", adding he was confident things will be "very much better" by 5 April

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for use in the UK, with the first doses to be given on Monday, while the scientists are looking at whether the vaccine is as effective against the new strains

Covid cases in Scotland rose by 2,045 - the highest single-day figure since mass testing began, as the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said even tougher restrictions cannot be ruled out

Not having a pop at you Tone, but why is this different from the NHS in the winter of 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016....ad infinitum?

I just wish that more people realised and understood that their freedoms are being eroded, and will never be given back, for what????

Covid-19: UK reports a record 55,892 daily cases

The UK has reported another 55,892 daily cases of coronavirus, the highest figure on record.

And another 964 people died within 28 days of a positive test, only slightly down on the 981 on Wednesday.

It comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock appealed to everyone to "take personal responsibility this New Year's Eve and stay at home".

He said he knew how much had been sacrificed this year but, with the NHS under pressure, "we cannot let up".

On Thursday, just after midnight, 20 million more people in England were placed under the toughest restrictions and told to stay at home.

The new restrictions mean 44 million people, or 78% of the population of England, are now in tier four, where non-essential shops, gyms, cinemas and hairdressers have to stay shut.

The UK's chief medical officers have defended plans to delay giving people a second dose of the coronavirus vaccine to enable more people to receive their first dose sooner

The UK celebrated the dawn of 2021 with a fireworks and light display over London that included tributes to NHS staff

Most revellers heeded warnings to stay at home - but police handed out hundreds of fines while breaking up parties and gatherings that breached Covid restrictions

Covid: NASUWT and NAHT threaten action over Wales school return plan -

Unions representing teachers and heads in Wales have called for face-to-face teaching to be suspended in response to the new coronavirus variant.

The NASUWT has threatened "appropriate action in order to protect members whose safety is put at risk".

Head teachers' union NAHT Cymru said it had taken legal action against the Welsh Government to obtain scientific evidence it said it was "withholding".

The Welsh Government said it had agreed an approach with local authorities.

The National Education Union Cymru had already called for in-person learning to be delayed until at least 18 January.

According to councils, many secondary schools aim to return from 11 January, with some fully open on 6 January.

Welsh schools have been asked to make provision for vulnerable children and children of key workers from this week.

Covid: Regional rules 'probably going to get tougher', says Boris Johnson -

Regional restrictions in England are "probably about to get tougher" to curb rising Covid infections, the prime minister has warned.

Boris Johnson told the BBC stronger measures may be required in parts of the country in the coming weeks.

He said this included the possibility of keeping schools closed, although this is not "something we want to do".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called for new England-wide restrictions within 24 hours.

Sir Keir said coronavirus was "clearly out of control" and it was "inevitable more schools are going to have to close".

It comes as the UK recorded more than 50,000 new confirmed Covid cases for the sixth day in a row, with 54,990 announced on Sunday.

An additional 454 deaths within 28 days of a positive test result have also been reported, meaning the total by this measure is now above 75,000.

We must go into a national lockdown - PM -

The prime minister adds that given the alarming figures, it had become "clear that we need to do more" to bring the new fast-spreading coronavirus variant "under control" and help the vaccination roll-out in the UK.

He says we must therefore go into a national lockdown, with the government once more telling people to stay at home, except for specific reasons, including essential shopping, to work, if you cannot work from home, to exercise, to seek medical help, to escape domestic abuse.

He says the government will be advising clinical extremely people to begin shielding again.

Primary and secondary schools must move to remote learning from tomorrow, except for vulnerable children and those of key workers, he adds.

Given this, it is not "fair" for all exams to go ahead this summer, he says.

Covid: Schools in Wales to stay shut until 18 January -

All schools and colleges will move to online learning until 18 January in Wales.

Some schools had been due to open on Wednesday and others by 11 January with decisions made by local authorities.

Education Minister Kirsty Williams said the decision had been taken jointly with the Welsh Local Government Association and Colegau Cymru.

Teaching unions had called for a delayed start to term amid concerns about the coronavirus variant.

However, the timing of the decision has been criticised, with some claiming it left little time for parents and schools to make plans.

Ms Williams said: "As a government we will use the next two weeks to continue to work with local authorities, schools and colleges to best plan for the rest of term.

"This is the best way to ensure that parents, staff and learners can be confident in the return to face to face learning, based on the latest evidence and information."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said more than one million people are currently infected in England, with the numbers of patients in hospitals 40% higher than in the first peak

He said that over 1.3 million people have been vaccinated in the UK so far, including 1.1 million in England and more than 650,000 people aged 80 and over

Almost 1,000 vaccination sites will be operational by the end of the week, including 595 GP-led sites

The prime minister said there would be daily updates on vaccinations from Monday to ensure "maximum transparency"

Prof Chris Whitty said that the UK case rate increased by 70% in the last two weeks of 2020, with the Office for National Statistics estimating that around one in 50 people are currently testing positive for the virus

Prof Whitty added that the new variant of the virus is taking off in "all" areas of the UK

He said more people are in hospital than ever, noting that this increase means "we will inevitably see a rise in deaths" in the coming weeks

Boris Johnson said, with certain provisions, it could be possible to end lockdown measures in mid-February

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says the coronavirus vaccine rollout is a national challenge requiring an unprecedented effort, and will require help from the armed forces to deliver

Johnson confirmed almost 1.5 million people in the UK have now received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine

Health Secretary Matt Hancock admitted vaccine supply was a "rate-limiting" factor to the vaccination programme, as some politicians warned doses may run out in some areas

And some patients have turned down the chance to have the Pfizer vaccine because they want to "wait for the English one", a doctor has said. The US/German Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was made available at the start of December, while the Oxford-AstraZeneca version was authorised three weeks later

Some hospitals in England are at risk of becoming Covid-only sites, with rising admissions for the virus forcing trusts to cut back on other services

Two anti-inflammatory drugs, given via a drip, have been found to cut deaths by a quarter in patients who are sickest with Covid
