“ How we got Dillon Phillips “

Postby Forever Blue » Sun Feb 21, 2021 9:25 am

Andrew Dibble our goalkeeping hero from years ago, born in Cardiff and Luton Town hero is nowadays totally responsible for the training of our goalkeepers and also has to do his homework on the opposition penalty takers and their strikers .

Dibble knew Dillon Phillips was unhappy at Charlton and wanted to leave. They knew each other well and Dibble went to the CCFC committee and said we need two good goalkeepers in the Championship now that Neil Etheridge had gone for a few of your to £1mill to Brum.

So on Andrew Dibbles advice and what he is paid to do, Charlton were approached and with Phillips unhappy there , a fee worth up to £500,000 was agreed.
£250,000 now and the rest depending on appearances etc etc.

We also have cut the wage by half compared to Etheridge :thumbright:
And I have to say I was a big Etheridge fan.
It also gave the club money for other new players.

As to the great saves yesterday Dillon Phillips is known as a great penalty stopper.

Dibble works with our goalie’s big time on the penalties like he did with Neil Etheridge :bluebird:

Anyway a big gratitude to Andrew Dibble for bringing in Dion Phillips :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

WOW, Andy Dibble is almost unrecognisable as I remember him, But as most of us of a certain age, we live with memories of the past eh

Dillon looks to be a great acquisition for us. Pity he is not a Welshman as Hennessy must be coming towards the twilight soon and we need a cracking replacement for him in the Wales Squad.

Maybe a forgotten great grandparent or Cardiff residency will work for Giggs ?

Dibble is doing a fantastic job with the goalies to be fair. Etheridge, Smithies and Phillips. Can’t fault how better out goalies have got since working with AD

I remember well Dibble making a first appearance as our regular goalie was injured (cannot remember who that was)
when I heard the team announced I turned to my mate and said "oh no we are going to lose this with Dibble in goals" then a chap sitting in front of us turned and said, give the lad a chance he is a good goalie, I replied what makes you think he is a good goalie as we have not seen him play, he then said " I have seen him play many times, he is my son"
I was gobcmacked, :banghead: Dibble went on to have a brilliant game. After the match i tapped Dibbles father on the shoulder and told him that he was correct, his son is a very good goalie, and I should have watched him play before making the comment I did. At least it taught me a very good lesson which I have tried to follow all of my life, and that is:

I recall Dibble being rated no 2 behind Southall at one time in the League.

Dibble made his debut against Crystal Palace at home in 1982 which City lost 1-0. The main City goalkeeper in those days was Ron Healey.

To be fair he seems to be doing a brilliant job

Etheridge, Smithies and now Phillips all outstanding keepers at this level and it’s probably no coincidence that Dibble is working with them day in day out

Also heard very good things about young Radcliffe as well.

Haha great story.

I had complimentary hospitality a couple of years when we played Norwich. I was in the free bar having a few with my lad getting a bit pissed on the gin and talking to guy about the game.
Didn’t realise at first it was Bryan Gunn and his son was Angus in goals for Norwich.

We put 3 past him so I’m glad I didn’t start slagging the opposition goalie out!

I’ve often wondered just how much a GK coach can do in a training session, it’s not like outfield players who have countless things to do. It must be pretty isolated but Dibble (whom I recall with great affection as a superb young keeper with City - one save in the 1982 (day after) Boxing Day win over Newport in particular was just world class) is obviously worth his salary.

Top Top keeper coach Andy Dibble, the best City have ever had in my opinion streets ahead of Margetson totally comitted to the Bluebirds make no mistake Warnock would have hiked him off up to Boro in a jiffy , what a lot dont know is Andy was a city fan as a kid and has always been hate losing with a passion the tree keepers we,ve had since the Prem days have been superb under his coaching
wears the Bluebird on his sleeve with a passion :bluebird:
Keep up the good work Mr Dibble

Dillon Phillips, what did you make of it?

MICK McCARTHY:

Dibs (Andrew Dibble), they were teasing him afterwards, he pulled out his list. I gave him a pat on the back!

They are very detailed. Goalkeepers are because it’s a specialised position.

The last 25 minutes at 2-1 would have been a tough old ask! Their tails would have been up and we would have been feeling sick!

The standard of Goalkeepers we've had in recent years has been great. When did Dibble start as GK coach?
