About AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth is a professional association football club based in Kings Park, Boscombe, a suburb of Bournemouth, Dorset, England. The team compete in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Formed in 1899 as Boscombe, the club adopted their current name in 1971. Nicknamed "The Cherries", Bournemouth have played their home games at Dean Court since 1910.

Their home colours are red and black striped shirts, with black shorts and socks, inspired by that of Italian club A.C. Milan.

Initially known as Boscombe, the club competed in regional football leagues before going up from the Hampshire League to the Southern League in 1920. Now known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, they were elected into the Football League in 1923. They remained in the Third Division South for 35 years, winning the Third Division South Cup in 1946. Placed in the newly reorganised Third Division in 1958, they suffered relegation in 1970, but would win an immediate promotion in 1970–71. Relegated back into the Fourth Division in 1975, Bournemouth were promoted again in 1981–82 and after lifting the Associate Members' Cup in 1984 would go on to win the Third Division title in 1986–87. They spent three seasons in the second tier but entered administration in 1997 and ended up back in the fourth tier with relegation in 2002, though immediately gained promotion by winning the play-offs in 2003.

Bournemouth entered administration for a second time and were relegated back into League Two in 2008, but ended the year by appointing Eddie Howe as manager. Under Howe's stewardship, Bournemouth won three promotions in six years to win a place in the first tier of English football for the first time. This was achieved with a second-place finish in League Two in 2009–10, a second-place finish in League One in 2012–13 and a Championship title in 2014–15. The club remained in the Premier League for five seasons before suffering relegation in 2020.

Sorry mate my tenner goes on 2-1 to the Bluebirds, you have had your two clear goals now , now it's my turn to have my bet come in :occasion5:

I will happily settle for any victory, even a goal off someone's arse! We are on a good run, but Bournemouth are a good team, and won't just fold. This and the boro games have suddenly got huge, I'm sure MM will have their feet on the ground, and will be using the age old mantra of "one game at a time" and he is correct of course.

It's fine for us fans to get over exited, and perhaps guilty of getting ahead of ourselves, but not the players.slowly slowly catchy monkey ;) but them and MM have got us firing on all cylinders of late, and it's certainly perked this board up (bar the usual suspect or two). Keep the faith CCFC. :ayatollah: :old: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Mick McCarthy's Cardiff City have now picked up 15 points from the last 15 available in the Championship.

In that time, they've defeated rivals Bristol City in the Severnside derby, scored 13 times and have now kept back-to-back clean sheets. Plus 7 games undefeated :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Also they have Dominic Solanke out injured and David Brooks is now injured as well. Don't know when they are due back but think in the case of Solanke it is not any time soon. Still a strong squad though and they will be our toughest match so far under McCarthy.

Seems like the vast majority of their fans don't like the appointment of Woodgate as manager. He had a very poor record at Middlesborough a 21% win record which got him sacked just before they were relegated. Think some of their fans wanted Thierry Henry as their manager but his win record as manager of Monaco and Montreal is almost as bed as Woodgates.

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy issues fitness update ahead of 'huge' Bournemouth game

The Bluebirds head into Wednesday night's clash with a view to usurping the Cherries in the play-off spots

Tuesday 23rd February 2021

Cardiff City are set to welcome back Junior Hoilett for what Mick McCarthy has called the toughest game of his Bluebirds tenure.

A number of key players have been absent in recent weeks, with the likes of Isaak Davies and Rubin Colwill named on the City bench, with the latter making his debut in the win over Coventry City.

But Saturday's 4-0 thumping of Preston North End saw the welcome inclusion of Jonny Williams and the return of Sheyi Ojo as the Bluebirds' squad continues to look stronger with each passing week.

Now, Hoilett is in contention for Wednesday night's clash with Bournemouth, having missed the last three fixtures with a calf issue.

Joe Ralls, though, is still not fit enough and might not even be ready for the weekend.

MICK McCARTHY:

"There are few tired legs from Saturday, but nothing really," McCarthy said. "Junior Hoilett trained yesterday. Joe Ralls will train today.

"It’s just bumps and bruises, but nothing that will keep them out."

McCarthy also said that Jordi Osei-Tutu is targeting the week beginning March 6 for his reintegration with the first-team squad, while Lee Tomlin is set to turn out for the under-23s for the second time in as many weeks on Tuesday afternoon as he steps up his recovery.

It is all seemingly heading in the right direction for the Bluebirds, who will need to utilise all of their squad as they head into the business end of the season.

Ahead of Wednesday night's game, City are just three points behind sixth-placed Bournemouth and a win would displace the Cherries in the play-off spots.

That is almost unthinkable given where Cardiff found themselves just a few short weeks ago, but following a string of positive results - two draws and five wins - the Bluebirds are now in punching distance of the top six and McCarthy wants that momentum to carry them forward and copy last season's feat of reaching the play-offs.

"I hope we emulate that," McCarthy said of last year's end-of-season charge to the play-offs.

"There is a different feel to this game, of course. It's a big game and we can get into the play-offs if we win it.

"But, equally, the last thing they want to do is drop out of the top six, Bournemouth. I understand the feelings from both clubs.

"I keep stressing that all we can do and the momentum that we have has come off the back of good performances.

"Play as well as we can and if we do, quite clearly we have the ability to win games in this league. It’s a huge game for us."

McCarthy said just a few weeks back that he had "unfinished business" in the Premier League, whether that comes with promotion this season or not remains to be seen.

However, there will be no getting carried away ahead of what the manager agreed was his "toughest test" so far

"I'm not going to tell a lie, you always want to do as well as you possibly can.

"You start thinking you can get in the play-offs then you get to Bournemouth and get slapped and people call it a flash in the pan.

"So I don't get carried away with it at all. Let’s just try and win the game and see where we are at.

"I'm in no way thinking about being in the Premier League."

Should City beat Bournemouth and move into those top-six spots, though, and thousands of fans in the Welsh capital will doubtless be daring to dream.

Sky Sports’ David Prutton predicts how Bournemouth vs Cardiff will pan out this evening

By Jake Sanders

24/02/2021

David Prutton has predicted Cardiff City to continue their outstanding form under Mick McCarthy with another crucial victory over Bournemouth.

Cardiff’s thumping win over Preston on Sunday moved them within three points of the Cherries, and a sixth straight victory here will move the Bluebirds above Jonathan Woodgate’s men purely on goals scored.

Three points at the Vitality Stadium would mark Cardiff’s best Championship run for three years, but more importantly, see them climb above Bournemouth and into the top-six for the first time this season.

But Bournemouth have performed well since the departure of Jason Tindall, although the South Coast outfit are looking to bounce back from losing at Queens Park Rangers.

The hosts might start out as favourites, but Prutton told Sky Sports that Cardiff’s form will prove the difference on Wednesday evening:

“The fact Bournemouth have appointed Jonathan Woodgate as manager until the end of the season should add some stability going into the business end of the season, which is much needed after the way the last two months have panned out for the Cherries. They really are in danger of dropping out of the top six.

“That adds all the more importance to this match, with Cardiff lurking just three points behind them ahead of this game. Mick McCarthy’s men have won all five of their league fixtures in February and he remains unbeaten as Bluebirds boss. Therefore, I’m siding with them.”

The Verdict

With home advantage counting for little at present, I think Bournemouth will be happy to simply avoid defeat here.

But Cardiff are full of confidence at present, and with Josh Murphy and Kieffer Moore in excellent goalscoring form, whilst the Bluebirds’ back-four is also performing well, I think McCarthy’s men will come away with another three points here, their sixth on the bounce.

Mick McCarthy has his Bluebirds playing 'The Cardiff Way' again and Burnley have proved it can bring Premier League success

By Scott Johnson

Wednesday 24th February 2021

Cardiff City are achieving success by playing in their own style again

Will Vaulks always speaks with a refreshing honestly. After the very impressive win over Preston at the weekend, he admitted when addressing the press that Mick McCarthy had just quipped to him: 'No wonder you’re so good at winning the ball back because you keep giving it away!’

Vaulks then went on to pose a question that cut through a lot of the bluster and drama you find on social media these days when people discuss Cardiff.

"Why can’t we just embrace what Cardiff City are? Let’s face it, we’re horrible to play against, we’re physical, we run further than teams, we win battles and we’ve got quality. Why do Cardiff need to change to be successful? Not every football team should play out from the back.

"The gaffer is by no means just long ball, it’s whatever it takes to win a football game. I think we’ve got Cardiff back to what they’re good at and why can’t we be the best in the league at that?"

It’s the sort of stirring statement that supporters dream of hearing from one of their players. A rallying cry at exactly the right moment. Cardiff have somehow, against the odds, totally turned around their season and it's time to get back on board because who knows where this bus is taking us.

Vaulks was the first to admit that playing this way suits his combative style, so of course he’s going to show unwavering support for it. Why it struck such a chord though is because it demonstrated that he gets it.

He gets what Cardiff is about, even if that has been muddied and lost in recent months.

Like it or not, and some don’t, Cardiff have always been blue collar in their approach and how they’re received by supporters. You can refine the style of play and add a bit of flair, but those working class, hard graft credentials are non-negotiable. If they slip, you’ll know about it.

Neil Harris was attempting to add a little silk to the steel and he managed it, but only in spells.

Lee Tomlin was a key component of that and his absences rather undermined the process.

By the end of his time in charge, it was hard to ascertain what he was aiming for or trying to achieve.

Mick McCarthy has restored lots of things, but clarity may be the most important. It appears to make sense again and what Cardiff are is once again apparent.

Vaulks, for example, has a more clearly defined role once again. Where there have been times where he was charging all over the place, trying to do everything, it has been simplified back down to marshalling a specific area and breaking up play. It suits his game and he is thriving.

Repeat that all over the pitch and you have the basis for Cardiff’s revival; round pegs in round holes.

It can sometimes feel like all is lost in football, until a fresh set of eyes and a new voice disrupts the status quo and plots a new course. This has also happened at Chelsea recently and there are suddenly shoots of recovery at Bristol City too.

I’m sure everyone agrees that winning is certainly better than losing and recent form is far superior to the turgid showings either side of Christmas, but for some, they still see it as a short-term fix. If Cardiff have designs on not only making the Premier League, but also staying there, then surely they need to take greater care of the ball and adopt a more progressive approach?

That may feel like a poorly timed, ungrateful grumble, but it is and will continue to remain a valid question. The way Cardiff tend to play only seems to get you so far and conceding 70% of possession in the Premier League is asking, sometimes begging, for trouble.

Anyone who has watched either of Cardiff’s youth teams recently will have noticed that they play with the flair and purpose that some supporters are crying out for. Under Harris, the plan was for that to filter through to the first team, but that process appears to have been, understandably, halted.

Cardiff needed to be bailed out, but going forward, there is clearly a disconnect again. The flip side of this argument is that there is more than one way of playing, as Vaulks made a point of stating.

The idea that the right manager could have Cardiff playing like Manchester City is far fetched. The limitations of this squad were highlighted towards the tail end of Harris’ tenure and McCarthy has them again playing to their strengths.

It may not be to everyone’s tastes, but like it or not, to borrow and retool a tired Swansea term, it’s The Cardiff Way. It will remain their way until they make alternate plans and plot a different course.

The way Cardiff play is nothing to be ashamed of though and when it works, it can be beautiful in its own way.

I still feel like the Premier League has yet to see the full-fat version of Cardiff. Under Neil Warnock, they were a slightly timid version of their former selves, but Burnley continue to demonstrate that a more rugged, no frills approach can still bring sustained success.

Cardiff’s recent form has been as extraordinary as it was unexpected. Suddenly we’re talking about fifth as a target, like it’s 2020 all over again. With Tomlin and Jordi Osei-Tutu nearing a return, anything suddenly seems possible, but it all still feels precariously based on Kieffer Moore’s continued fitness.

For the moment though, its time to heed the words of Vaulks. Let’s just enjoy and embrace the return of theold Cardiff because they suddenly look like they’re going places again.
