About Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is a professional association football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The team competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Formed in 1867 as an offshoot of The Wednesday Cricket Club (itself formed in 1820), they went by the name of the Wednesday Football Club until changing to their current name in 1929.

Wednesday is one of the oldest football clubs in the world of any code, and the third-oldest professional association football club in England. In 1868 its team won the Cromwell Cup, only the second tournament of its kind. They were founding members and inaugural champions of the Football Alliance in 1889, before joining The Football League three years later. In 1992, they became founder members of the Premier League. The team has spent most of its league history in English football's top flight, but they have not played at that level since being relegated in 2000.

The Owls, as they are nicknamed, have won four league titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and one FA Community Shield. Wednesday have also competed in UEFA cup competitions on four occasions, reaching the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1963. In 1991, they defeated Manchester United 1–0 in the Football League Cup Final as a tier 2 team. As of 2019 they remain the last team to win one of English football's major trophies while outside the top flight.

In the 19th century, they played their matches at several stadiums around central Sheffield, including Olive Grove and Bramall Lane. Since 1899, the club has played all its home matches at Hillsborough stadium, a near-40,000 capacity stadium in the north-west Sheffield suburb of Owlerton. Wednesday's biggest rivals are Sheffield United, with whom they contest the Steel City derby.

Mick on Morrison:

‘He’s strained his calf. He’s still a doubt for Monday and we’ll have to see about next Saturday. He’s a big loss for us, but I have to compliment Ciaron Brown for his performances. Also Tom Sang and Joe Ralls playing at left wing back. They’ve all done great.’

Big Mick on Bagan’s shoulder: ‘He had an operation. He’s recovering. He was never going to be involved again this season if he had the operation. The temptation was to give him rehab and get him back, but once you’ve done it, you’re likely to do it again”

Injuries to both Morrison and Bagan are unfortunate for Cardiff’s chances of sneaking a late play-off place – they looked good for it a few weeks ago but defeats against Forest and Watford recently have left them lagging behind a bit.

It’s still possible for the Bluebirds to sneak into the top six, but Bournemouth look stronger on paper and also when you factor in that they don’t have a natural left-wing-back for the rest of the season, Cardiff look vulnerable down the left.

McCarthy will be hoping for Morrison to be back sooner rather than later – he’s formed a solid trio with Aden Flint and Curtis Nelson and even though Ciaran Brown is a decent back-up, he’s no Morrison.

Injury bombshell means discarded ex-Sheffield Wednesday man could take Cardiff armband in Hillsborough clash

The Sheffield Star

Sunday 4th April 2021

Injury to one of Cardiff City’s main men will likely see a former Sheffield Wednesday player take their captain’s armband for the Bluebirds’ trip to Hillsborough tomorrow.

Club captain Sean Morrison is very unlikely to take the field for Mick McCarthy’s play-off chasing side, with a calf strain forcing him out of their defeat to Nottingham Forest on Friday.

The man mountain centre-half is a talismanic figure for the Welsh side.

The news means Aden Flint, whose loan switch to Wednesday was cut short by the Owls in January, will likely take the armband at Hillsborough. He made only four appearances for the Owls before suffering a hamstring injury in November.

Sean Morrison looks likely to miss Cardiff's trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

Brought back into the fold by Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy after the departure of Neil Harris earlier this season, Flint’s efforts since his return from injury have been widely lauded, with McCarthy admitted he was ‘surprised’ he had been allowed out on loan at all.

The giant defender filled in as captain in the Forest reversal and looks likely to do so again under the lights at Hillsborough.

“You don’t have the career and play the amount of games Flinty has and become a bad player,” said his teammate Marlon Pack on a difficult few months for Flint.

“He is old enough and wise enough to know sometimes that’s how football is.

“But when you’re in that situation it doesn’t always feel that way. Credit to him, he dealt with it brilliantly.

“At times, he might not say it, he was unlucky to be out of the team and not getting a look-in, especially when results weren’t going our way.

“But football can easily change and he has been given a chance with the new gaffer and he has definitely taken it.”

On Morrison’s injury, McCarthy said: “He has strained his calf. He is certainly a doubt for Monday. We will have to see about next Saturday.”

One former Wednesday player who will not feature is left-back Joe Bennett, who was ruled out for the rest of the season back in March when he suffered a nasty anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Cardiff’s playoff push has stuttered a little either side of the international break, with only one win arriving in their last five matches.

Re: LATEST NEWS " SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY v CARDIFF CITY " MATCH

Sun Apr 04, 2021 11:57 pm

Mick McCarthy spoke of the importance of remaining positive and bouncing back against the Owls on Monday evening.

MICK McCARTHY:

“I said to the players: ‘I’m disappointed, you’re disappointed, but it’s what we do with that disappointment.’ There are more positives around here than there are negatives, that’s for sure.”

“There’s not a lot been going wrong; we’re talking about a 45-minute performance against Forest where we didn’t play as well as we have in the past two months.”

“Then I thought the second 45 minutes were much better. Whether we did create enough clear-cut chances to deserve something, I don’t know, but we were certainly the better side in the second half.”

“So, we’ll go to Sheffield Wednesday and try to replicate the second half, rather than the first half.”

“I have reminded them they are fighters and we go to Wednesday still full of confidence and wanting the three points.”

Jamie Smith (assistant manager):

“We will go into the game with confidence and we will play to win. We can see the improvements and the progress we have made in recent weeks.

“We will take those positives into the Cardiff game and the remaining games we have left.”

Mick McCarthy:

"If we can win on Monday and get back to winning ways, because that's what we'll have to do, then we will still be pecking away.

"I won't be giving it up."

Today is the time to play for a win not play to avoid defeat? If things are not going our way by halftime then is time to change players and formation not wait until the normal 70+ mins! While not a must win game anything but this will almost end our challenge unless the 3/4 above us lose! :o

I just don't get the Bacuna thing.

Yes he scored a couple but he is a good closer if we are winning and want to see out a game. Add that to Jonny Williams is a creator rather than a scorer i struggle to see where the goal are coming from except Kieffer or Flint. Surely Harris deserves a crack at that position and he adds real pace to stretch the field and also works hard. The two wingbacks are not very quick as they are CM's.

I assume Josh is injured

Anyway i am just a fan not a football professional.

City win, BTTS and Fint anytime is my bet. C'mon city :bluescarf:
