Injury bombshell means discarded ex-Sheffield Wednesday man could take Cardiff armband in Hillsborough clash

Injury to one of Cardiff City’s main men will likely see a former Sheffield Wednesday player take their captain’s armband for the Bluebirds’ trip to Hillsborough tomorrow.

Club captain Sean Morrison is very unlikely to take the field for Mick McCarthy’s play-off chasing side, with a calf strain forcing him out of their defeat to Nottingham Forest on Friday.

The man mountain centre-half is a talismanic figure for the Welsh side.

The news means Aden Flint, whose loan switch to Wednesday was cut short by the Owls in January, will likely take the armband at Hillsborough. He made only four appearances for the Owls before suffering a hamstring injury in November.

Sean Morrison looks likely to miss Cardiff's trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

Brought back into the fold by Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy after the departure of Neil Harris earlier this season, Flint’s efforts since his return from injury have been widely lauded, with McCarthy admitted he was ‘surprised’ he had been allowed out on loan at all.

The giant defender filled in as captain in the Forest reversal and looks likely to do so again under the lights at Hillsborough.

“You don’t have the career and play the amount of games Flinty has and become a bad player,” said his teammate Marlon Pack on a difficult few months for Flint.

“He is old enough and wise enough to know sometimes that’s how football is.

“But when you’re in that situation it doesn’t always feel that way. Credit to him, he dealt with it brilliantly.

“At times, he might not say it, he was unlucky to be out of the team and not getting a look-in, especially when results weren’t going our way.

“But football can easily change and he has been given a chance with the new gaffer and he has definitely taken it.”

On Morrison’s injury, McCarthy said: “He has strained his calf. He is certainly a doubt for Monday. We will have to see about next Saturday.”

One former Wednesday player who will not feature is left-back Joe Bennett, who was ruled out for the rest of the season back in March when he suffered a nasty anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Cardiff’s playoff push has stuttered a little either side of the international break, with only one win arriving in their last five matches.
