:bluebird: :bluebird: “ MICK McCARTHY UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS “ :bluebird: :bluebird:

Thursday 8th April 2021

Josh Murphy, recovered from illness?

He trained really well today! Whatever he’s been doing while he was off, he was terrific in training this morning, so he’s fine. He’s available for Saturday.

McCarthy

Mick McCarthy says Cardiff's lack of goals is a 'concern' and suggests teams have worked out how to nullify their threats, which looks to be the case to me.
Also tells players to get back down to earth sharpish after all the 'smoke blown up our backsides' #ccfc

MICK McCARTHY:

Do you have to win every game?

Probably, yeah.

We are on 58. 76? I’m not even sure that would get you in. 72 normally would get you around it, 70 some years!

We will try to win every game anyway, but it’s going to prove very difficult now.

But we’ll never give it up while you can.

McCarthy

Have you got over Monday?

Not completely, I watched it again this morning. I went home and watched Brentford and Birmingham on Tuesday night.

It’s just rekindled it for me, which I didn’t want on a Thursday morning!

You just have to get over it.

McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

Anyone else back?

No, not really. The ones who are injured, Joel Bagan, Joe Bennett, operations. None of them are coming back.

McCarthy

:bluescarf: :bluescarf: “ READ ALL MICK McCARTHY’S UPDATES BELOW “ :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

You want to put it right against Blackburn?

MICK McCARTHY:

Of course! The lads are all hurting, all moping around a bit.

They were in on Tuesday for recovery and training and had yesterday off. Trained hard today, trained well.

But we have to get out of that malaise. We have lost a game, just the scoreline makes you feel worse.

MICK McCARTHY:

See anything that hadn’t occurred to you on the day?
Not anything we hadn’t seen. We had been really good at defending set pieces and on the night we got it wrong. We got moved around, blocked for the first goal, that opened us up.

Throw-in, we should have marked the thrower and got it back.

The second goal was ridiculously good, you could try that another 1,000 times and it wouldn't happen. But it did.

The free-kick was always going in, that’s just the way it was going.

We lost our discipline then which caused the fourth goal.

When they broke on us for the fourth, that’s another amazing goal by them. Then it was dead.

Similar with the fifth, particularly good by them and bad by us.

I can’t be too critical, it’s the first time it’s happened.

MICK McCARTHY:

Sean Morrison back?

No, it’s unlikely. We are looking more at Reading. He would be a huge help.

I don’t like saying things like that because it’s to the detriment of the other lads coming in. But when we are talking about Sean Morrison, how well he has played, even against Swansea on one leg.

It would be great to have him back but it’s too soon this weekend.

MICK McCARTHY:

Mick McCarthy: ' NG Perry & Tom Sang '

Perry Ng fit enough to start from the off? Had a watching brief last few games?

Mick McCarthy:

Yeah, Perry is fine. But to be honest Tom Sang has done really well playing there and Joe Ralls did well at left wing-back.

But he is fit and available.

MICK McCARTHY:

How much scope do you have to change things?

There’s not much scope to change any defenders! They have been excellent and not given that many goals away.

Sweeping changes don’t always work, but I’ll be considering it certainly.

We had 18 players out training today, so there’s not much scope.

MICK McCARTHY:

How much are you now looking at next season, chats with the chairman soon?

We need to be having a chat about that and I will be doing that as soon as possible, in terms of the players we require.

There are players on loan, some out of contract.

We are certainly looking towards next season.

But first and foremost, everything is easier to plan for if you win on the Saturday, so Blackburn is my focus at the moment.

Nothing happens without Vincent Tan?

Absolutely! I’ve just seen Ipsiwch have been taken over, Derby have been taken over. Everyone is looking for someone to come in and invest some money.

MICK McCARTHY:

Kieffer Moore, is he looking weary?

I think he looks knackered! That’s slightly more than weary!

But we don’t have a replacement for him.

He is our main focal point up front and we have no one to replace him. The other strikers are not Kieffer Moore.

They have all got their own skillset. But they are not Kieffer.

MICK McCARTHY:

Game management for Kieffer Moore, is that something you have to look at?

Mick McCarthy:

Of course. It’s just been one of those things, when we didn’t manage to get anyone else in the transfer window.

It was always going to leave Kieffer as an isolated target man.

It’s not been possible.

MICK McCARTHY:

He has Euros in front of him too?

He has, but he has that to look forward to. I’ve been there with that. It’ll be next season.

I remember playing at Celtic, the best year of my life when we won the double, then we went to the Euros and it was brilliant.

I came back to pre-season and I felt brilliant, then I ran out of juice completely!

We were all running on empty. It was the best pre-season I’d ever felt, then it was like someone pulled the plug out of me!

So that would concern me. But we can plan for that.

MICK McCARTHY:

Junior Hoilett’s not played, what’s his situation at the minute?

MICK McCARTHY:

I haven’t had any discussions about his contract, that was ongoing before I got here. I just got here and got my head down and wanted to play games.

We will be having those discussions with him.

In terms of playing time, the lads who have played either side of Kieffer have played very well and that’s just restricted his chances.

But the next six games, who knows?

McCarthy

So you view him as a forward rather than a winger in this system?

Mick McCarthy:

If I took a right wing-back and put him on because I wanted an attacking one on… he works very hard, Junior, I’m not so sure about the defensive role in a back five.

He wouldn’t be found wanting trying, that’s for sure!

But he’s a better forward, that’s for sure.

Joe Bennett, too, his situation?

I’ve spoken to Joe about his situation.

Seven months, he will be back, please God willing, he will be paid until the end of July, I think he will be fit come October, so there is a discussion to be had with him and his agent in terms of what he wants to do and what the club wants to do.

MICK McCARTHY:

Swansea’s ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign, what do you make of that? Can it raise awareness that way?

My social media presence is zero, so it won’t affect me.

I am appalled by any sort of abuse. Racist abuse, bullying. I can’t imagine what kids go through now, they go to school, get bullied at school, go home and look at social media.

It’s appalling.

Someone has to make a stance. I saw Thierry Henry came off it. If one person is going to make a difference, I don’t know.

But I just don’t get it. There’s no doubt if I was on it I would get abused.

So as far as I’m concerned it’s a good thing they are making that stance.

I think clubs, we have a great responsibility that we can have an effect. So fair play to them for doing it.

MICK McCARTHY:

Have you learned more about your side after defeat?

Of course. The lads kept going. There was no bickering between them.

The third and fourth goals came because we were pressing and we end up losing a bit of discipline and organisation.

We can’t fault the effort and their endeavours.

But you can learn more in defeat than victory.

MICK McCARTHY:

This week’s prep another learning curve for you?

I’m not going to learn too much about them. I’ve watched the game back and I have the same opinion.

You learn about their reaction. The only way you can get back to it.

They all worked damned hard. Individually we are not going to win games but collectively, we can be a very good side.

MICK McCARTHY:

Same reaction this week to coming back at Barnsley?

I’d not seen anything to suggest they’d downed tooled or packed it in!

You can play badly, but I can cope with that. What I can’t cope with is non-tryers.

I’ll forgive them for playing badly, they (Wednesday) played well, but it wasn’t a performance that concerned me about the reaction.

Wednesday were unbelievable. It didn’t start that way!

Up until the second goal, which was unbelievable.

My beef is that we let them out from a throw-in twice. We got frustrated, two or three of them try to make a tackle (for the third). That’s when you need a cool head. Don’t give a free-kick away there to put us 3-0 down.

Sometimes you’ve got to stand up and don’t do it (foul them).

If they played like that every week they’d be up there with Norwich and Brentford.

Their coaching staff should be thrilled. Let me tell you, Sheffield Wednesday have better players than bottom of the league.

Look at the squad they’ve got, I’d be disappointed if I was in the situation they’ve got. They were bottom of the league on Monday and look at the reaction they’ve got.

What you expecting from Blackburn?

Mick McCarthy:

Tony Mowbray’s team, a good footballing team.

Some good footballers, pace up front. That can cause problems that’s for sure.

Tony will be trying to pass through the lines and it will be an interesting game.

Expecting a busy summer? How much will this summer be affected by Covid?

Who knows? We will get down to our business when we get down to it.

Football will be affected. Contracts will be affected. There are no fans, there’s no revenue.

I don’t know what it’s costing Vincent to keep this club going, it’s amazing clubs are continuing in the way they are.

MICK McCARTHY:

Have you got over Monday?

Not completely, I watched it again this morning. I went home and watched Brentford and Birmingham on Tuesday night.

It’s just rekindled it for me, which I didn’t want on a Thursday morning!

You just have to get over it.

Mick McCarthy says Cardiff's lack of goals is a 'concern' and suggests teams have worked out how to nullify their threats, which looks to be the case to me.
Also tells players to get back down to earth sharpish after all the 'smoke blown up our backsides' #ccfc

Pre-match facts

Six of the last nine league meetings between Cardiff and Blackburn have ended as a draw, including a goalless draw earlier this season.

Blackburn are looking to win consecutive away league matches against Cardiff for the first time since April 1985 (four in a row).

Cardiff conceded as many goals in their 0-5 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday last time out as they had in their previous 10 league matches combined.

Blackburn are winless in their last six league games, the longest current such run in the Championship.

Only Emiliano Buendía (15) has more assists in the Championship this season than Blackburn’s Harvey Elliott (10).

You’ve had time to assess the squad, haven’t you?

When you’re on that brilliant run, everything seems golden.

Not to me, I could still see areas we could strengthen, what players could do better at.

But the bad run and bad results exacerbate that.

Everyone starts looking and can critique then. Even at that you have to look at the good in things as well.

Josh Murphy, recovered from illness?

He trained really well today! Whatever he’s been doing while he was off, he was terrific in training this morning, so he’s fine. He’s available for Saturday.

Mick McCarthy: Jordi & Lee Tomlin latest news

MICK McCARTHY:

We had a a mixed team of youngsters and Jordi & Lee Tomlin playing this week against Exeter City.

Yeah, Jordi played his 30 minutes, thats all we expected from him.

"I never watched it,I wasn’t there because I went to watch Brentford and Birmingham on Tuesday night on a scouting mission."

"Jordi was very good for 30 minutes, needs more of these games."

"Lee Tomlin did his bit and played, he is back in the treatment room now, he has got a sore thigh, I believe, or so I’ve been told by the physios, will still be a while."

"The game was fine. It was great for Jordi to get on and get 30 minutes and a smile back on his face is great for him."

Another 23s game and then pushing back for first team?

MICK McCARTHY:

Yeah, he was never going to be involved with us after 30 minutes. The plan in place had to be extended because of circumstances with him.

He will play in the next u23s game and hopefully we will get the go ahead to involve him in the first team.
