About Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers Football Club is a professional football club, based in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, which competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was established in 1875, becoming a founding member of The Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992. In 1890, Rovers moved to Ewood Park. Blackburn Rovers have been English champions three times, and have won six FA Cups, one Football League Cup and one Full Members' Cup. The club has spent most of its existence in the top flight of English football.

In 1992, Rovers gained promotion to the new Premier League a year after being taken over by local entrepreneur Jack Walker, who installed Kenny Dalglish as manager. In 1995, Rovers became Premier League champions. In the 1998–99 season, the club was relegated. It was promoted back to the Premier League two years later, in the 2000–01 season, before suffering relegation again in the 2011–12 season. Rovers have not returned to the Premier League since. It has qualified for the UEFA Champions League once, and the UEFA Cup six times: once as League Cup winners, four times through league position and once via the Intertoto Cup.

The club's motto is "Arte et Labore", meaning "By Skill and Hard Work" in Latin. They have a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Burnley, with whom they contest the East Lancashire derby.

Pre-match facts

Six of the last nine league meetings between Cardiff and Blackburn have ended as a draw, including a goalless draw earlier this season.

Blackburn are looking to win consecutive away league matches against Cardiff for the first time since April 1985 (four in a row).

Cardiff conceded as many goals in their 0-5 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday last time out as they had in their previous 10 league matches combined.

Blackburn are winless in their last six league games, the longest current such run in the Championship.

Only Emiliano Buendía (15) has more assists in the Championship this season than Blackburn’s Harvey Elliott (10).

MICK McCARTHY:

Joe Bennett, too, his situation?

I’ve spoken to Joe about his situation.

Seven months, he will be back, please God willing, he will be paid until the end of July, I think he will be fit come October, so there is a discussion to be had with him and his agent in terms of what he wants to do and what the club wants to do.

What you expecting from Blackburn?

Mick McCarthy:

Tony Mowbray’s team, a good footballing team.

Some good footballers, pace up front. That can cause problems that’s for sure.

Tony will be trying to pass through the lines and it will be an interesting game.

My opinion of McCarthy will be again tested by his team selection tomorrow.

It’s time to ditch the 5 at the back which in reality saved us from a relegation scrap but now it’s high time we saw some new faces and 4-4-2.

The likes of Vaulks, Pack, Bacuna and Moore can sit on the bench.

I’d go:

Smithies
Ng Nelson Flint Brown
Ralls Colwill Sang Wilson
Harris Watters

If we arnt setting up with sang and NG as wingbacks then we need to change formation to suit the players better.

Could set up something like this:

Philips/smithies
NG, Flint, Nelson, brown
Ralls, bacuna
Wilson, colwill, Murphy/ojo
Watters

Not sure if sang can play RB? Could go NG and Sang as fullbacks instead of Brown - to offer a bit more going forward.

What's the team news?

Cardiff are likely to once again be without skipper Sean Morrison, who continues to struggle with a calf injury.

Joe Bennett (ACL) and Joel Bagan (shoulder) remain long-term absentees, but Josh Murphy is back after recovering from illness, while Perry Ng is also fit.

Jordi Osei-Tutu played half an hour in a recent friendly with Exeter City, but remains out of contention. Lee Tomlin also played in that game, but is similarly a big doubt.

Meanwhile, Blackburn will be without Joe Rankin-Costello after he limped off with a broken metatarsal last time out, but Joe Rothwell could be in contention, despite going off in the clash with Bournemouth on Easter Monday.

Mick McCarthy:

"When you’re on that brilliant run, everything seems golden.

"Not to me, I could still see areas we could strengthen, what players could do better at.

"But the bad run and bad results exacerbate that.

"Everyone starts looking and can critique then. Even at that you have to look at the good in things as well."

Tony Mowbray:

"We’ve been saying that for a few weeks because you can’t go this long without winning games, because you obviously need points.

“I’m not overly concerned to the point where you don’t want to transmit nervousness to the team, because we can only take things game-by-game.

“We need to focus on the next game and see how we do at Cardiff City before we host Derby County, the week after that."

Miss! Cardiff carved right open there! The cross falls to Armstrong on the edge of the box but he drags his shot wide!

Close!

Kieffer Moore whips in a low cross but Murphy cannot get enough on it to steer it home from close range!

What a tackle!

Kieffer Moore does brilliantly to slalom his way through the defence, but just when he goes to pull the trigger, Tom Trybull slides in to dispossess him.

Vaulks with a lovely ball through the middle, but Murphy is offside. He would have been clean through there.
