Friday 30th April 2021

What's on the agenda?

Birmingham test

Social media boycott

The possibility of some Cardiff debuts at St Andrew's

Injury latest

The transfer window

The possibility of Sol Bamba playing before the end of the season

Lee Tomlin is injured again .

MICK McCARTHY:

Have you made decisions on the players you want to keep next season?

Pretty much, yeah. I’m not going to tell you, though!

Mick McCarthy

McCarthy is asked what he expects from Birmingham?

It’s never a dead rubber! I’m not having that.

There is always something to play for. If you’re playing for pride or the shirt, there is something to play for.

Birmingham won’t want to drop off now. They have been excellent. They have been fighting.

They have been scrapping and that’s not going to stop. It won’t stop with us either.

Mick McCarthy

McCarthy on Birmingham's impressive relegation escape?

Absolutely! If you don’t do that then you’ll just slide out of the league.

They’ve got good players. You still need to work hard and be organised and that’s what they’ve been and got the results.

They’ve been very good.

MICK McCARTHY:

McCarthy is asked about giving more first team debuts after Rubin Colwill's recent outing?

Possibly, yeah.

Rubin was excellent and he will be involved tomorrow and we have got a few others - Isaak Davies is in the squad, young Kieron (Evans) is in the squad, Sam (Bowen).

We have a few travelling with us, we have a few injuries, but it was my intention anyway to have some youngsters in the squad anyway.

They’ll be involved now, over the next couple of games. Hopefully they’ll have some game time.

MICK McCARTHY:

Bamba has spoken about playing - is that possible?

I haven’t seen his quotes! He has been out training with us and he has been great on those small pitches.

But I don’t for one minute think he’s fit enough to play in a game, no.

But it’s been great to have him out. He’s been great and has a smile on his face. He is moaning like a drain at every bad decision I give him, which means he is alright. It’s great to have him back.

He’s not ready to play a game, not yet.

He’s a lot closer to playing than I am, that’s for sure!

He is training really well - but wishful thinking in terms of being on the pitch.

MICK McCARTHY:

Will there be a big squad overhaul in the summer?

We’ve got loan players we can’t do anything about and they’ll all be going back to parent clubs.

And we’ll make an announcement, when appropriate, the players who will be here and the players who won’t be.

MICK McCARTHY:

Do you expect business to be done later this summer?

I think people will have to generate money through sales. Then you might have money to spend.

There are lots of players coming out of contract and we are on top of that. Good players are coming out of contract then get in the contract and see what you could afford.

Spending? Most clubs will have to generate some money. I’m looking forward to it!

MICK McCARTHY:

How quickly do you want to move in the transfer market?

It would be lovely to have the business done.

But no club will be doing their business and paying them through May June and July when no one is playing.

I don’t think… not until June.

Mick McCarthy on Will Vaulks' community award?

I do think it is important to have good people in the club. Good guys who are prepared to work and understand what’s going on around the place - not self absorbed.

They understand what it means to supporters and what it means to the community.

When you are doing that, you’ll do it in the team.

He is selfless in how he runs and works and I felt so bad for him last week. He didn’t mean to injure the guy at all. It was a bouncing ball and it doesn’t look good, but he’s not that kind (of player).

It’s sad he can’t be involved in the next two games and the first game of next season.

He is fabulous. A really good guy and a good player.

He is appreciated by everybody for what he does and I’m glad he gets that award.

MICK McCARTHY:

Sean Morrison is in the Championship Team of the Season. How important is he and how good is he at this level?

He is very important as a player and a captain.

Maybe when we came back after the Swansea game we won and he had hurt his calf, that affected us.

He is ever-present up until that apart from the Barnsley game, where he had a false positive (Covid test), then we found out he could come and he came on as a sub and made a difference immediately.

He has been terrific at this level all the time.

When I was at any other club playing against him I knew he was a threat in our box and great at defending his own.

Thoroughly deserved, being in the Team of the Season and a great character and captain.

Jonny Williams said lads call him Zlatan in training, do you?

I hadn’t heard that one!

We call each other a few things but I’ve not heard him being called Zlatan.

McCarthy is asked if he's surprised Will Vaulks hasn't been in the Wales mix of late?

I don’t pick the squads.

He has been excellent for me. He has done exceptionally well for me but I don’t pick the Wales squad.

I’m disappointed for him, he is a great lad.

McCarthy on Kieffer Moore going into Euro 2020 on a high?

Yeah he was excellent. I was just having a chat to him this week about his workload the last two years.

I spoke in the press about him having a rest, but he doesn’t need a rest.

I’ve been there and done it. You feel great, it’s just when you come back.

Sometimes you have that two or three week break and it takes a while to get going.

But he will be fine in the Euros.

"I don't see a brighter horizon," McCarthy said bluntly."

"What's a brighter horizon? Is that people slinging money around?' "

"I see the brighter horizon as getting the best players in you possibly can afford and then you crack on and have a go at it."

"Across it all, I can't imagine there is any club that's not struggling for finances and cash."

"I see a lot of loans, yeah there will be. I wonder what Premier League clubs will be doing, I don't know what the Brexit rules are on letting players in. There's lots of things that have changed."

'We will be mostly looking for loan players and players out of contract."

"And there are a lot of players out of contract this year. They'll be looking for clubs and I think a lot of clubs will be tightening their belt."

McCarthy on playing during the pandemic?

I will say thank you on their behalf. Everyone putting themselves at risk, but the lads have.

They are meeting players every week, three times a week.

All this about social distancing, I don’t see that from marking corners and throw-ins and things like that.

I don’t think they deserve the praise the key workers do. We have been enjoying it, don’t get me wrong.

It’s the best job you can have, playing football.

MICK McCARTHY:

Will you speak to players about the possibility of them going on holidays this summer?

I’ve not given it too much consideration.

At the moment we have been on lockdown in terms of not being able to travel.

I think to suggest that when the government say you can travel abroad - I’m not sure we can tell players not to go, if it’s on the green list.

They’ve got to remain safe and diligent in what they can do.

If they have been away, if they come back we might have to insist them coming back two weeks before so they can isolate.

They all deserve a holiday. Two years of doing it non-stop. If there’s an opportunity I’m not going to stop them, no chance.

MICK McCARTHY:

What are your thoughts on the upcoming social media blackout in football?

I’m glad there is some stance being made. But I’ve made other guys who are not doing it like Akinfenwa. If you consider the furore about the Super League, everyone was getting fined and banned, I’m interested in that stance.

It won’t affect me because I’m not on it.

I understand them taking that stance. It’s appalling people giving abuse and there is no comeback for them. It’s atrocious.

CCFC Injury news :bluebird:

Sean came off with his elbow. That’s proving to be a problem for him. Max Watters has a tight hamstring.

Jordi has got an ankle problem. Will Vaulks is obviously suspended. That’s enough for now!

I’m just looking at the list; Junior Hoilett, Tommo, Isaac Vassell, Joel Bagan, Joe Bennett, Tom Sang.

And Uncle Tom Cobley and all! There’s plenty there.

Will this be the most challenging transfer window for you?

They are always challenging. Whether it’s clubs who do or don’t have money.

Do they want to keep them or change the contracts?

I don’t see it being any different this year. It’s exciting when you get the players you want… I’m just looking forward to it.
