Covid: Drakeford set for Covid talks after Welsh election win -

Mark Drakeford's cabinet will agree which restrictions to lift next when ministers meet on Monday for the first time since Labour's Welsh election win.

Allowing pubs and restaurants to serve customers indoors from 17 May is the next Covid rule to be relaxed and now foreign holidays is to be discussed.

Mr Drakeford is to lead a Labour-only Welsh government after they won half of the Welsh Parliament's 60 seats.

Mr Drakeford is to be formally sworn in as Wales' first minister on Wednesday.

A reshuffle of his cabinet is expected soon after - and there is at least one cabinet vacancy to fill after Liberal Democrat and former Education Minister Kirsty Williams stood down at the election.

Thursday's Senedd election left Labour one short of an outright majority, a feat that hasn't happened since devolution in 1999, but minister Jeremy Miles said the result allowed Labour to work with parties on a "case-by-case basis".

Covid: Wales cinema rules 'impractical and unnecessary' -

Only a "small minority" of cinemas in Wales will be able to reopen next week under current restrictions, according to an industry trade body.

Confirmation is expected on Friday that cinemas can reopen from 17 May.

But the UK Cinema Association said regulations were different in Wales to the other nations, with venues following the same, stricter rules as indoor hospitality.

The Welsh government said cinemas would open "when safe to do so".

Phil Clapp, chief executive of the association which represents 90% of the industry including big cinema chains, said because many cinemas were licensed for the sale of alcohol it meant Welsh officials had "lumped them in" with pubs and restaurants.

He said the rules in Wales differed to England and Scotland in three ways.

Under Welsh government guidelines the following rules will apply to cinemas:

Customers will have to be seated while ordering and buying food and drink
Even if customers use the QR code system to "check in" and register their details, they will still have to collected by the venue
The venue is also expected to verify details by asking people for photo ID, for example a passport or driving licence
The time customers leave the cinema will also have to be recorded

Lockdown: Six people can meet in pubs in Wales from Monday -

Up to six people from different households will be able to meet indoors at pubs, cafes and restaurants in Wales from Monday.

First Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed indoor hospitality can reopen from 17 May as Wales' Covid case rate continues to fall.

Extra cash support for hospitality businesses still affected by Covid restrictions has also been announced.

Mr Drakeford said the funding would "support firms and safeguard jobs".

The support is available to businesses such as pubs, clubs, restaurants and late-night entertainment venues.

They can claim up to £25,000 to help them through to the end of June as they prepare for re-opening and more normal trading conditions.

The news comes after there were calls from some in the hospitality industry for all significant restrictions on trading to be lifted before July.

The hardest hit area for Covid during the pandemic in Wales has had no Covid patients in its critical care units for more than three weeks.

Covid: Wales residents urged to hold off foreign holidays -

People in Wales will be urged to only travel abroad for "essential" reasons for at least three more weeks, the BBC understands.

UK government advice is that people in England can holiday abroad to a small number of countries from Monday.

Portugal and Israel are among so-called "green list" destinations from the UK.

But Welsh ministers say people in Wales should only go abroad from Monday 17 May for "essential purposes".

BBC Wales understands that on Friday First Minister Mark Drakeford will say Wales will move into Covid "alert level two" from Monday.

Covid: People in Wales asked not to travel abroad -

People in Wales will be able to travel to a small list of countries from Monday without going into quarantine when they get back.

But despite adopting the traffic-light system used in England, ministers are advising people not to go abroad.

The first minister warned it was "best avoided" because of concerns travellers could bring Covid with them.

Meanwhile, he revealed he had planned to go further in easing Covid rules but paused because of the Indian variant.

Plans to allow pubs to trade indoors, and for cinemas and museums to reopen, will go ahead from Monday.

Ministers had considered relaxing lockdown restrictions further on the same, but Mark Drakeford said officials had "decided to hold back" for more advice.

He told the BBC he had been considering allowing "some small events" and "greater mixing between people not in a household".

Covid: Plea to get the jab in variant hotspot areas -

People eligible for a vaccine in areas where the Indian virus variant is spreading are being urged to get the jab.

Health minister Edward Argar said there had been a "minor increase" in hospital presentations in Bolton, mainly among unvaccinated 35-65 year olds.

The Army is to be deployed in the Greater Manchester town and Blackburn with Darwen to help with mass testing.

Cases of the Indian variant have nearly tripled in the past week, data shows.

Surge testing is taking place in targeted areas across England where virus variants have been found, including postcodes within several London boroughs, Sefton, Worcestershire, and Nottingham.

Prof Anthony Harnden, who advises the government on vaccinations, said there were still "lots of unvaccinated people in at-risk groups in these areas".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "The worry is that those unvaccinated vulnerable individuals, those over-50, unvaccinated, will develop Covid from this more transmissible [variant] and end up in hospital."

Covid-19: Boris Johnson urges caution as lockdown eases for millions -

People must continue to play their part in stopping Covid, Boris Johnson has said ahead of the easing of lockdown in England, Wales and most of Scotland.

From Monday, millions of people will be able to socialise indoors in limited numbers, hug loved ones and visit pubs and restaurants inside.

The ban on foreign travel will also be lifted and replaced with new rules.

Wales:

Pubs and restaurants can reopen indoors and customers can meet in groups of up to six from six households
All holiday accommodation can reopen
Cinemas, bowling alleys, museums galleries and theatres can reopen
No change to indoor socialising - this is still restricted to extended households where two households can mix with each other and have physical contact
And in all three nations, foreign holidays are allowed.

Matt Hancock is quoted as suggesting that 'the vast majority of people diagnosed with the Indian mutation in hotspots such as Bolton and Blackburn haven't had the vaccine despite being eligible'. This includes people now being hospitalised.
If this is correct, then I feel that our progress out of this never-ending lockdown restrictions is being hampered by a combination of some poor decisions by the government, with the latest being the delay in closing the borders to flights from India; along with those people who continue to refuse the vaccine. (obviously not including those with medical issues prevention them from having the jab)

Strict lockdown the areas like bolton they did it in Australia and it works... that should tax the minds of those selfish idiots who refuse to have vaccination .... the longer we put off doing this the more likely it will spread and cause further national lockdowns

Allan, can you not see the dichotomy of what you are saying? You cannot have it both ways.

Either you believe that the vaccine works, and thus by default, if you take it up you are safe and have nothing to fear from those who "choose" with their own "freewill" not to take your route.

Alternatively, if you are not convinced that the vaccine works, why would you try and force it on others!

For some strange reason, and I must admit it baffles me, there has never been a serious MSM debate (to my knowledge) on this very question. Why? :bluebird:

It's never been 100% safe, so for heard/community immunity we need a high uptake in the vaccine to reduce the chances of it spreading, if everyone does their bit we could beat the virus quicker

Bolton shows what happens when lots of people chose not to be vaccinated, it spreads at a much faster rate.

I hear you......but you haven't addressed the question that perplexes me!

If you are vaccinated, and many others decide to take the same route, why worry about the unvaccinated? They are not your problem as obviously you are safe.

I'm not talking in riddles, but no one seems to be able to answer this very straight forward, simple question. :bluebird:

I understand your concerns, but in fairness they will not be the "reason" for any delays in restrictions. The only reason for delay is our Government.

I grant you that that Government may use this as a convienent excuse......but ultimately it is their decision. If you still believe them I am happy for you, ignorance is bliss. :bluebird:

Covid: Concern as Indian variant cases double in Wales -

People are being warned "not to become complacent" after confirmed cases of an Indian variant of Covid-19 more than doubled in Wales in under a week.

Public Health Wales (PHW) said 25 cases of the "variant of concern" had now been confirmed, with most linked to international travel.

With numbers up from 11 in less than a week, PHW urged people to take precautions as lockdown eases.

Wales dropped to alert level two on Monday.

Pubs and restaurants were able to reopen indoors with social distancing, while cinemas, theatres, visitor attractions and indoor play centres could open for the first time in months.

However, as the lockdown changes were announced, the first minister said he had "held back" on easing measures further due to concerns about the Indian variant.

I understand your concerns, but in fairness they will not be the "reason" for any delays in restrictions. The only reason for delay is our Government.

I grant you that that Government may use this as a convienent excuse......but ultimately it is their decision. If you still believe them I am happy for you, ignorance is bliss. :bluebird:

The problem is regardless of what any of us think, if the NHS starts to struggle and the virus starts to multiply quickly, all the UK governments bring in restrictions, so unless we get as many vaccinated as possible, our lives are going to be adversely affected :(

We will never get rid of it, but vaccinations are currently the best way of dealing with it and getting rid of the restrictions.

:bluebird:

I don't think anyone vaccinated is worried about the unvaccinated as 95% safe, and even if they get it they will have mild symptoms
