Mick McCarthey: “ Gavin Whyte “

Wed Jul 21, 2021 11:30 am

Mick McCarthy has revealed a number of clubs are interested in taking Gavin Whyte on loan this season but the Bluebirds boss is still yet to make a concrete decision on the winger's future.

Whyte was already on loan at Hull City when the manager arrived back in January and the Northern Ireland international played a big part in helping them reach promotion to the Championship.

Before the end of last season, McCarthy did not rule out sending him out again this season, but wanted to make an assessment for himself during pre-season.

Whyte did himself no harm on Tuesday night, anyway, as he injected some pace and go-forward in the final throes of the game against Forest Green Rovers and showed what he could offer this side in the wide channels.

He was also on hand to poke home a late winner from Isaac Vassell's cross to help the Bluebirds to victory, an aspect of his game previous manager Neil Harris had wanted to see more of ahead of his loan move to Hull.

But whether Whyte gets the chance to make an impact in the blue of Cardiff City come the start of the season still appears to be in the balance.

Hull have expressed an interest in taking him back, while the player's former club Oxford United are also thought to be among those keen to get him back ahead of the League One campaign.

And McCarthy has said there has been contact over a loan deal for the player, but he has told the potential suitors that he wants a good look first before any decision is made. He did suggest that game time might be hard to come by, though.

Should Gavin Whyte go out on loan this season? Let us know in the comments section below

MICK McCARTHY:

"There's a few interested in taking him on loan," McCarthy.

"But as I said to all of them, let's have a look at him first and we'll see what develops.

I think MM will see what he can get in the loan market before letting anyone go?
