It's because they have given their fans 86 seasons in the top division.no doubt they will get back there eventually and we will be bumping along getting no where like usual.

But for 40 years NO real success like the big clubs.

They have both spent now many many years in the lower leagues not the Premier.

These fans are young now and have only experienced mainly Championship, League 1 & 2.

Pompey were like us in the 80’s.

Sunderland never win much.

Quite happy to bump along if it means 2 major cup finals and 2 promotions to the top league in just over a decade.

Annis my late dad used to tell me that 20,000 Sunderland fans would turn up every week just to watch the grass grow for an hour and a half. Always made me laugh :laughing5:

Thats exactly what they are like, I once saw them play away at Tranmere on a Sunday 12,000 fans they took and I saw them play at our stadium over 10,000 fans, we had 7,000 fans.

I remember that game. Late 70s? They absolutely packed the open grange end if I remember rightly.

Never liked Sunderland fans since they booed during a minute's silence at Ninian (following the death of John Charles I believe)

Goes to show never to big to be relegated but at least having big away following boosts the finances of clubs they have visited in div one for past 3 seasons or so...

Sunderlands: best years were mainly before 1959 , since then its been ups and downs and recently down.

Portsmouths: best years again mainly before 1959

1959–1979: Decline and relegation to the Fourth Division, from then on its been up and down and recently mainly awful years.

Seriously?. Sunderland spent 13 years in the premier League .I think you need to look deeper into clubs history . believe me no one suffers with under achievement like Cardiff city
