Former Cardiff City and Swansea City manager Frank Burrows has died at the age of 77.

Burrows managed the Bluebirds twice, first during the late 1980s and again between 1998 and 2000.

He also led the Swans between 1991 and 1995, winning the Football League Trophy in 1994.

Burrows was a popular Cardiff manager after taking over with the club in the bottom division of the Football League in 1986.

He went on to achieve promotion to the old Third Division the season after his appointment.

And, when he returned to the club in 1998, he guided the Bluebirds to promotion once again, this time reaching Division Two.

Burrows was also a much-loved figure at Portsmouth, who he managed on two occasions, while he also worked as assistant manager at West Brom.

Before his career in management, the Scot was a central defender for Raith Rovers, Scunthorpe United and Swindon Town.

A Swansea City statement said: "Swansea City is saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Frank Burrows at the age of 77.

"The Scotsman was appointed Swans boss in March 1991 and guided the club away from the threat of relegation, before winning the Welsh Cup with victory over Wrexham at Cardiff Arms Park.

"Frank was a popular and much-loved figure at the Swans and within Welsh football, and everyone at Swansea City sends their sincerest condolences to Frank’s family and friends at this sad time.

"The first team will wear black armbands in his memory for this evening's Championship fixture against Barnsley before a further tribute at Saturday’s home game against Reading."

A Cardiff City statement added: "All of us at Cardiff City were saddened to learn of the passing of two-time Bluebirds manager Frank Burrows at the age of 77 earlier today.

"Frank first became Cardiff City manager in 1986, leading the team to promotion into the Third Division in 1987/88. He returned to Ninian Park for a second spell in charge in 1998, again winning promotion in the Welsh capital. His team of 1998/99 finished third in the Third Division, earning automatic promotion to the Second Division.

"All of our thoughts are with Frank’s friends and family at this sad time.

"Rest in peace, Frank."

RIP boss you give me my city debut v QPR and worked tirelessly with all the young lads proper old school hard as nails but a gent off the pitch if we were poor on a Saturday and lost and expecting the usual tea cups to be thrown at us I think he broke his foot once kicking the kit trunk he would say that will do for me and give us a couple of days off and when we won 2 or 3 nill he would say you are all in Sunday morning proper man manager remember him making a substitute in the late 80s when drawing a home game at Ninian Park about 10 minutes to go and they put up the number 11 to come off for us Brian McDermott he had a bit of a sulk and walked slowly off the pitch Frank run on the pitch and grabbed him by his collar and dragged him off to try and win the game a born winner :bluebird:
