Robbie Fowler: ' Cardiff City '

Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:56 am

My View: I felt Robbie Fowler ripped us off.

£25,000 a week, did nothing for us, a waste of space, past his sell by date & if he had stayed another year, we would of been robbed even more. NO THANK YOU.

Added a few more lines in his book to sell more.

Liverpool FC legend Robbie Fowler reveals his big Cardiff City mistake and regrets about not repaying the 'fantastic' fans

Cardiff is a brilliant city, great club and I wish I'd given those fantastic fans something to remember me by - Fowler

Robbie Fowler in his Cardiff City days

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has lifted the lid on his year at Cardiff City and revealed his biggest regret in the game was not signing a new contract with the Bluebirds.

Fowler arrived in South Wales to a huge fanfare in July 2007 after completing a second spell at the Anfield giants, but within 12 months he had left Cardiff for Blackburn.

And one of Liverpool's favourite players admitted leaving the Bluebirds was a huge mistake, lauding Cardiff as a 'brilliant city, a great club, and having fantastic fans'.

And he added in an updated version of his autobiography: "Looking back, I would have loved to have something for those fantastic fans - given them something to remember me by."

Just a couple of months before joining chairman Peter Ridsdale and manager Dave Jones at Cardiff, Fowler had come off the bench to help Liverpool reach the final of the Champions League in their penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea in the semis.

But he became a free agent in the summer having scored 183 goals in 369 appearances during his two spells with the Merseyside club.

He made hiss Bluebirds debut in a 1-0 friendly win over FC Twente, but limped off with a thigh strain after just 25 minutes and missed the season’s opening league fixtures due to fitness problems.

The following month he claimed his first two Cardiff goals against Preston, scoring with two headers.

He bagged two more in his next game, a third-round Carling Cup tie against West Brom, which the Bluebirds won 4–2 to set up a clash against Fowler’s former club Liverpool at Anfield, but Cardiff were knocked out in a 2-1 defeat.

It was the start of Fowler's injury woes as in November 2007 he travelled to Frankfur to see Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth, a specialist sports injuries doctor, to try and resolve a recurring hip problem.

A mistimed tackle in training from club captain Darren Purse also left him with damaged ankle ligaments and although he tried to battle back for Cardiff's historic FA Cup final with Portsmouth, the Bluebirds and Fowler agreed to sit things out for a full-throttle start to the 2008-09 season.

Despite having a year left on his Cardiff deal, Fowler said in his book: "Things changed over the summer.

"I can't quite put my finger on it and I really don't want to rake it up again, but Peter Ridsdale called me in and asked if I'd help the club out by signing a pay-as-you-play contract.

"It wasn't stingy - the rewards would be there if I put together a decent run of games.

"But my issue with it was that I already had a contract, I was happy enough with things as they were, and I laid myself open to the whims of selection by signing this new proposal, I might go an entire season without being picked, played or paid.

"It was hardly pistols at dawn, but it's fair to say the club and I had a bit of a falling out over it.

"On reflection I wish I'd just signed the revised contract; not doing so is easily my biggest mistake and biggest regret in football.

"Cardiff is a brilliant city, a great club, and looking back, I would have loved to have something for those fantastic fans - given them something to remember me by."

I remember at the time being glad that he wasn't fit to play in the cup final. He played no part in the run and didn't deserve it. However, there have been many times since when I've thought, he could have won us the FA Cup.

On the pitch crap for us BUT he generated excitement bringing in more fans through the turnstiles, everyone seemed to have Fowler on their city shirt and let’s be honest. We can say he was one of our players, a big name player come to lil ol kardiff, an we are still talking about him on this forum all these years later. Don’t think we will be saying that about Madine. Excitement Annis, bloody excitement, he brought a buzz about the place. Take your point though on him being crap for us on the pitch though, when’s that bothered us. Honestly would you not want Bale down here when he’s 33 or 34 and past his prime for a season.

As an add on remembered watching Heskey and Gudjohnson playing for Bolton down here fairly recently when they were like 36 and 37 and tore us apart. Loved watching class football pros. A real treat whoever they play for when you live football

Totally agree with this. The game he scored twice against Preston, he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. He oozed class, with his movement and finishing. Just a shame the injuries played a massive part in his time here.
When he left, like everyone else I was furious and very bitter about Fowler, but time is a great healer, he admits he made a mistake, so I forgive him.

Didn’t he rip up a load of £50 notes in somebody’s face whilst out in town on the piss whilst he was here?

He don’t care about us as soon as he smelt Blackburn’s money he was gone.

All I can say is he scored more goals than Madine and stayed not as long but the money he brought the club in shirt sales with his name on the back and attendances improved too.

I was getting a new shirt to take on holiday and the queue was huge reminded me of trying to get cup tickets and it was all fans getting fowler shirts he brought a lot of excitement at the club also I agree I think if he played in the cup final we might have won it.

I remember at west brom is a cup game we were 4 nil up half time Fowler Hasslebank and Sinclair tore them appart I can think of far more players that were a bigger waste of money

I remember all those fans spending hard earned money on City shirts with 'GOD' on the back. Shortly afterwards, 'GOD' had disappeared into the wilderness never to be seen again in these regions. Good riddance!
